Morgan Rogers deserves a new contract after proving himself at Aston Villa. That’s the view of former West Brom and Wolves striker – and Sky Sports pundit – Don Goodman, who says the 22-year-old has proved him wrong since signing for Villa.

While it seems a footballing lifetime ago, it was only in February that Villa stole a march on the rest of the Premier League by paying a reported £8m, rising to £15m, to Middlesbrough for a player who had done well in the Championship without absolutely tearing it up.

However, he has been a revelation since his move to Villa with Unai Emery getting the best out of a player in which Manchester City clearly saw something when they took him from the West Brom academy.

This season Goodman has noted Rogers’ progress – and his first call-up for England – and says he thinks talk of a new deal is merited, even thought the players is only nine months into a five-and-a-half-year contract.

“I was so impressed by Morgan Rogers' reaction to being left out of the England squad in October. He shrugged it off and did the business for England's under-21s side,” Goodman told the Gambling Zone.

“He's been brilliant this season and the fact that he's started all 11 Premier League games is an acknowledgement from Unai Emery that he rates him tremendously highly. He's also impacting games having registered three goals and two assists.

“So it’s brilliant that he has been called up for the November internationals and is a reward for his hard work. You can’t think it’s guaranteed that he gets that first cap as he's competing with the likes of Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Jude Bellingham for a place in but he has an opportunity to impress and that’s just a reward for how good he has been this season.

“He absolutely deserves the new contract that is being reported. I openly questioned if he was ready to play Premier League football and I was completely wrong. He clearly was ready and I just didn't see that at Middlesbrough on a consistent basis.

“Since joining at Aston Villa he's grown and just seems to be getting better with every game. He's grown in stature and all power to him, of course, he deserves a new deal!”

Rogers will of course hope to benefit from the withdrawal of Palmer and Grealish, who have pulled out through injury.
