Coventry City player ratings v Hull as EMC and Rudoni secure comeback home win
Second half goals from Ephron Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni saw Coventry City come from behind to give Frank Lampard his first win at the CBS Arena – beating bottom of the league Hull.
The Sky Blues dominated the first half, creating 12 attempts on goal, albeit only three on target but just couldn’t find a way through the Tigers’ back line before being hit by a smash and grab goal minutes before the break.
Poor defending from a number of City players resulted in a cross being put into the far post where Ryan Longman headed onto the post, only for the rebound to fall kindly to Joao Pedro who slotted home.

Coventry, however, got themselves back on level terms seven minutes into the second half when Victor Torp sent in a cross from the right to the back post where Mason-Clark made contact with his face to beat the keeper.
City had the chance to take the lead in the 66th minute when Norman Bassette was brought down in the box, leaving Victor Torp to step up to take the penalty. But the Dane showed himself too early and the keeper guessed right to get down low to make the save from a shot that lacked any real power to beat him.
Mason-Clark, however, beat two men and sent in a brilliant cross to the six yard box in the 72nd minute for Rudoni to head home and give the home side the lead before the team stayed solid and saw out the result.
STARTING FORMATION: 4-2-3-1
BRAD COLLINS: 6.5
His kicking was a bit hit and miss early on, with one clearance falling straight to a Hull shirt, requiring Dasilva to intervene. Pushed wide a Longman shot as Hull threatened to restore their lead. Made a decent save to deny Burstow just after City’s penalty miss.
MILAN VAN EWIJK: 6.5
Got forward well and linked up nicely with Sakamoto down he right, combing well for City’s first attack that resulted in a Torp shot being deflected wide. Defended really well when called upon until the 44th minute when he allowed Longman to head onto the post, resulting in the ball falling to Pedro to score.
BOBBY THOMAS: 6.5/7
Had a relatively quiet first half but defended well when he had to as City dominated much of the opening 45. Could have reacted quicker to the loose ball off the post for Hull’s goal but pretty solid overall, particularly amid some late pressure.
LUIS BINKS: 6.5/7
Back in the side ahead of Latibeaudiere, he was alert to danger and dealt with the early threat from Hull’s right flank. Also too slow to react to the loose ball for Hull’s goal defender but defended well amid Hull’s late attempts for an equaliser.
JAY DASILVA: 6
Linked up effectively with Mason-Clark and Rudoni down the left and did really well until late in the first half when he failed to stop the cross from Kamara for the goal. Decent going forward.
VICTOR TORP: 6.5/7
Helped link the play from back to front on his return to the starting line-up in place of Eccles and put in some decent set-piece deliveries and whipped in the cross for Mason-Clark to score the equaliser. Made some good runs and got in some good positions in the final third but passed up the opportunity to give City the lead from the penalty spot when his kick lacked conviction and was saved low.
BEN SHEAF: 7
Steady in midfield where he grew into the game, making some decent tackles to win the ball and went closest to scoring in the first half with a far post header that was tipped over the bar by the keeper. Won the ball in the middle of the park, drove forward and slipped Bassette into the box where he was fouled for the penalty. Influential overall.
TATSUHIRO SAKAMOTO: 6.5/7
A decent threat down the right where he chopped left and right to work his way free of Ryan Giles - who was eventually taken off - to get the ball into the box. Did some decent work off the ball to help recover possession and defended really well late on to help see out the win. Decent overall.
JACK RUDONI: 8
Worked really hard all over the pitch, dropping back to cover when required when he read the game well to intercept one potentially threatening pass from Palmer. Made a great run to head home Mason-Clark’s pinpoint centre to give City the lead. Excellent throughout.
EPHRON MASON-CLARK: 8.5
Threatening down the left where he took on full-back Lewie Coyle, causing him problems in the opening 20 minutes with his power and pace. Got the better of his marker at the far post to score the equaliser early in the second half, with the ball coming off his face. Beat Coyle and then turned inside Mehlem to send in a superb cross for Rudoni to sore. Man of the match.
NORMAN BASSETTE: 6.5/7
Lively up front where he pressed and chased in the final third out of possession and came in for some rough treatment from defenders, regularly the victim of blatant fouls as he attempted to run in behind. Won City’s penalty when his pace got the better of Hughes.
SUBSTITUTES:
ELLIS SIMMS (73 mins, for Bassette): 6
Put himself about up top with his physical presence as City saw out the game and almost scored when he headed onto the far post from a Rudoni cross. Much better from the big man.
JAKE BIDWELL (80 mins, for Dasilva): 6
Added fresh legs and a bit of defensive steel.
