Ellis Simms fired a warning to Middlesbrough that Coventry City will be looking to build on an important victory over Luton Town.

Coventry have had a difficult start to the new season and find themselves 18th in the Championship table having picked up just their third league victory of the season against Luton at the weekend. To do so though, they had to claw back from 2-0 down at the interval.

Former Sunderland loanee Simms was among the scorers as Coventry put in a much-improved second-half performance to pick up three vital points that meant they avoided heading to the Riverside in the Championship bottom three. Now, he's clear in his target to secure more points to start heading in the right direction.

“We would like more points than we have," Simms said. "At the minute, we are not creating as much, but we are not worried about the goals, as long as we are winning as a team. That is the main thing. The manager keeps reiterating that if we keep getting into the right positions the goals will come.

“All goals I am happy with. As long as I am getting into those right positions, eventually one is going to fall for me. That happened today, so now I want to use this as momentum and get a rhythm going, score many more goals and help the team out.

“We know we have three tough games before the next international break, so we want to recover now and have a great week in training. Hopefully we play the same way as today and get the three points.”

As for Coventry's second-half turnaround, manager Mark Robins wants to see his side much more like that going forward. Though he was largely happy with the chances his side created in the first half against Luton, it was their larger level of control of the game that pleased him.

He said: “We got in a number of times and created some really good chances, set pieces were really good and inventive and we had a number of chances to take the lead and then with their first chance and second chance they score both and we’re 2-0 down.

"We’re looking at the character to turn it around and we spoke about it at half-time and said how important the next goal is. They were in the game and we felt that because of the chances and possession we had and from that point on we had control of the game.

“We brought Rudi [Jack Rudoni] on at half-time and that gave us another dimension in an attacking sense. Even at 2-1 down I turned around and said to the staff, whatever happens this is a template for what we need to do moving forward. It was high energy, determined and it had a lot of quality as well.

"It’s been difficult but it’s just one step. We need to make more steps into picking more points up and climbing the league to get to where we want to be. It’s been a tough period for everyone, so I want to thank everyone, but we’re not getting carried away. We will enjoy it, but we have three tough games coming up.”
