Creative players challenged to do 'not-so-sexy' part of the job
Tom Cleverley said after last night’s 1-1 draw at Hull City that he considers the all-round impact of each player when picking the team, and not just what they do when they have the ball at their feet.
The two players who combined for the Hornets’ late equaliser, Rocco Vata and Kwadwo Baah, were both on the bench for at least an hour at the MKM Stadium.
“Those two players are fantastic impact players to bring on, as they both have bags of quality and potential,” Cleverley pointed out.
“I challenged them to do the not-so-sexy part of the job now, and that will get them in the team.
“We all know we want to see more of Baah and Vata, and they know what I expect of them to get a starting place.
“I was really pleased with the impact and desire they showed.”
Vata has made only one Championship start since joining Watford from Celtic in the summer, and the 19-year-old’s nine appearances in the league have amounted to a total of 208 minutes.
“Rocco is an excellent finisher. He’s hungry to score goals,” said Cleverley.
“The goal will do a lot for him because he’s earned us a point as well.
“I remember me, coming here as a young player, my first goal came a bit earlier because I scored on my debut.
“You feel accepted once you’ve scored, and Rocco should feel like he has won us a point.
“I’m happy for him because he is always practising finishing and wants to do well.
“It’s not the final product that’s why Rocco has maybe not seen the pitch as much as he’d like, and now is his chance to improve in those other areas.”
As well as Vata and Baah om the bench, other pacy attack-minded players like Festy Ebosele and Ryan Andrews were also substitutes – was Cleverley looking to be tighter and more solid?
“Yeah, absolutely,” said the head coach.
“It gets to a stage where we’ve lost six out of nine away games before tonight, and I have to pick a team that will ultimately win us points.
“If that is a point, then so be it.
“And we looked solid up to the hour mark, and then obviously we have got matchwinners on the bench but I need to understand that when they come on the game will open up and we are susceptible to conceding.
“I thought Jeremy Ngakia did well on his return from the start this evening, and the plan was always to give him an hour.
“These lads who can be matchwinners, it is also their job to do the not-so-sexy parts of the game and that will get them in the team.”
