Dad of Emi Martínez reflects on 'best son of all' as Aston Villa man handed huge honour
The father of Aston Villa star Emiliano Martínez has delivered a tearful tribute to his son after he became the first man to be crowned the world’s best goalkeeper in successive years.
Martínez was handed the Yashin Award for the second year on the spin on Monday, rewarding his efforts in helping Villa qualify for the Champions League and Argentina to win the Copa América. The year before, the 32-year-old had also been instrumental in Argentina’s World Cup triumph.
Beto Martínez revealed his joy as his son’s latest career landmark during an interview with Super Deportivo Radio’s Radio Villa Trinidad, relayed via TyC Sports and Sports Witness.

He was quoted as saying: “There’s no longer any doubt that he’s the best goalkeeper in the world. As a dad it’s unique. Winning the Yashin Award isn’t very easy, and Emi did it twice.”
Reflecting on his son’s early years, he added: “When I heard his name, it all went through my head - the yard, where he was born, the kids when he went to train. You can imagine, you start to tear up, it brings back beautiful memories. To come out of a yard and be the best goalkeeper in the world twice, it’s not easy.”
And Martínez Sr insists success has not changed his son. He explained: ‘I can’t believe he’s the best goalkeeper in the world. I keep crying. I keep getting emotional. The only thing I take with me as a dad is that he never changed. He’s still the same Emi as always, the same teammate and friend as always.
“He’s still the best son of all. That’s what was good for me, then they win the awards individually.”
