David Gray '100 percent sure' he can do Hibs manager job as icon throws hat in ring

David Gray is "100 percent sure" he can do the Hibs manager's job on a permanent basis as he chucked his hat in the ring for the job.

The Easter Road icon has been the interim boss on four separate occasions and was in the dugout last weekend again after Nick Montgomery was sacked following a difficult season. Gray will be on the sidelines again tomorrow in the final game of the season but, for the first time, appeared to call for a shot at the gig full-time.

Asked if he would be keen on the job if presented with the chance, Gray was adamant he could fill the position comfortably given his past with the club and, indeed, the interim position.

And he believes he'd be a good fit. “I’ll always back myself, given the opportunity," he said. "I’ve been in this position four times now and it’s been uncomfortable for a number of reasons, first and foremost because there are people losing their jobs who you have been working with.

“But in terms of backing my ability to be able to do the job, I 100% believe I can do it.

"I’ve demonstrated that now on a few occasions but first and foremost I’m doing what the club have asked me to do. Until my position changes, it’s all about the club.”

He added: “It’s a fantastic club and it’s a fantastic job for whoever gets the opportunity to take the club forward.

“The decisions that are getting made in the background are all to try and move the club forward to where we believe it should be. It’s a challenge but it’s also one someone should be very excited about.”
