David Moyes takes aim at officials after latest West Ham penalty incident
David Moyes was again left furious after his West Ham side were denied a vital late penalty for the second time in a week.
Goals from Lucas Paqueta and substitute Danny Ings saw the Hammers come from 2-0 down at half-time to draw 2-2 with Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday.
However, Moyes felt his team ought to have been given an opportunity to snatch all three points from the spot when Clarets midfielder Sander Berge headed onto his own arm late on.
The incident came just four days after the Hammers were denied a penalty in the dying seconds of their Europa League first-leg defeat to Freiburg, a result which leaves them needing to overturn a 1-0 defect to reach the quarter-finals in Thursday’s home leg.
“Sander Berge heads the ball or tries to head the ball in front and it hits his arms,” Moyes said. “We had a decision not unlike that this midweek. There have been quite a few decisions today which really went against us.
“We have to do better, but let me tell you, you don’t jump with your two arms in front of your face, because you can only probably head it back that way.
“How many people head the ball into their hands? The answer to that would probably be none, or 0.1 per cent.
“So, I'm saying if your arms are in the wrong place and you head against it why would you not be punished?”
Moyes also voiced his frustration with the performance of referee Darren England more generally. Prior to his leveller, Ings also saw an effort ruled out for the tightest of offside calls against Michail Antonio in the build-up.
“The decisions today went so badly against us - the offside for the goal,” Moyes added.
“There is one in the first half where the linesman puts his flag up and Jarrod Bowen is onside. Even if he wasn't, the rules are supposed to be that you wait until he's got to be sure he's offside. He doesn't. He puts his flag up straight away and I've seen it and he's onside.
