'I didn't come here to be average' - Luke Williams in furious rant at Swansea City stars after Sunderland defeat
Luke Williams has blasted the mentality of his Swansea City team, and says Saturday's defeat to Sunderland demonstrates how far away they are from muscling their way into the Championship's top six.
Having raced into a two-goal lead courtesy of strikes from Zan Vipotnik and Liam Cullen, the Swans crumbled, and threw away the chance to take all three points as Sunderland hit back with goals from Dan Ballard, Dan Neil and Jobe Bellingham.
Williams was visibly seething when he faced the press after what was another disappointing defeat at the hands of one of the Championship's top teams.
This loss means Swansea have lost all seven of their games with the top seven so far, and Williams pulled no punches in picking over the bones of this result.
"Miles off the level," he said. "Miles off the top-six level. We're not even close. That's very obvious after watching that.
"Thinking about it [the top six] is one thing. But playing against the top six and getting destroyed makes you realise that we're nowhere near it.
"It's not even about how we can play against the top six. It's the mentality. We go two in front and then can't wait to concede because it's too much pressure.
"That's one of the things that happens when you compete in the top six. One of the things that happens is you accumulate pressure. If you don't like being there, it's not the right place for you, you try and find a way to get out of that uncomfortable situation and we did a brilliant job of that today.
"We couldn't cope with the pressure of being two up after a run of decent results. Couldn't cope with the pressure.
"I'm sad for the group of players in there. They obviously have a fear of achieving their potential. That makes me sad because I love those guys and they have an unbelievable opportunity and they are scared of it.
"I don’t want to be average," he continued. "I didn’t come here for that. Today was an example of us doubting what we can do and what type of group we want to be.
"There was a lot of doubt – it stank of it. I could feel it coming off the pitch into the technical area.

"That's my job, I am in tune with my group and I know when they are desperately trying to find a way out of a pressure situation.
"I have been with various different groups that have been on somewhere on the scale between can't stand the pressure of winning and others that can't stand the thought of losing."
His comments will likely draw more attention to the January transfer window, with the Swans still arguably lacking a little bit of depth in certain areas of the squad. However, Williams insists he feels there is already enough quality at his disposal.
"I believe that we have enough quality in the group if we play together," he added.
"I don’t think we are that type of Galactico group where we don’t always play well but somebody will always pull a rabbit out of the hat. That's not us.
"We have got enough quality if we work hard enough to establish ourselves in the game. As soon as we start to hide a little bit, as soon as we are not brave enough, then the sum of the individuals is not anywhere near the same.
"We are talking about competing with the top six and we are struggling to break through that barrier. We get tested in those games. We've done very well in parts of mall of those games but ultimately, we've failed because there is a difference between the genuine top six sides and the rest of us. We want to break into that group, but there is a lot for us to do to achieve that."
