Ex-Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has been appointed as the new manager of Trinidad and Tobago.

Yorke, who scored 54 goals in 165 appearances during four successful years at United, has dipped into coaching since retiring from football in September 2009. He completed his UEFA B coaching licence in 2010 - and has since earned the A licence and Pro licence, but didn't find an opportunity in management up until joining Australian side Macarthur FC in July 2022.

Three months later, Yorke guided the club to its first-ever trophy after winning the Australia Cup final. However, Yorke left Macarthur in January 2023 following a 1-0 loss to Adelaide United.

But, now, Yorke has been offered a route back into management with the nation he played for and the one he spent a brief time as assistant manager for shortly after hanging up his boots.

Speaking after being confirmed as the new head coach, Yorke said: "The opportunity to work with this talented, close-knit group of players is something I look forward to."

He added: "Having helped Trinidad and Tobago to the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2000, captained the side at the 2006 World Cup and been the assistant manager, my love and commitment to my national team is well-documented."

Trinidad and Tobago Football Association president Kieron Edwards said that Yorke's "experience, leadership, and commitment to the red, white and black are exactly what we need to inspire our players and our nation."

Yorke started his playing career at Aston Villa and impressed during the early-1990s. In fact, Yorke fired 98 goals in 287 appearances for The Villans before earning himself a move to United in 1998.

During his first season at United, Yorke was a key performer for United during that treble-winning season and formed a destructive partnership alongside Andy Cole. Yorke finished the campaign as the Premier League top scorer with 18 goals and contributed with important strikes in the Champions League.

Yorke was also a vital member of United's 1999/00 title-winning team, contributing 23 goals in all competitions. Despite a less successful third season, Yorke netted his 100th Premier League goal against Derby - in November 2000 - while he then moved to Blackburn in July 2002.
