EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Archie Fielding from Cwmbran has been crowned as European Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion.

The youngster flew to Lisbon in Portugal last week to go up against the best young athletes in the sport from around the world.

Showing incredible determination and focus, Fielding won every match by submission to win the gold medal.

It was the crowning moment in an extraordinary year for the youngster who trains under head coach Wayne Arandjelovic at Newport MMA.

His journey has taken him around the globe, with victories and medals won in Brazil, Portugal, Cyprus, Ireland and across the UK.

This year he has also competed in British wrestling and achieved impressive results, as well as notching up numerous wins in youth mixed martial arts competitions.

“His triumphs speak to both his skill and his passion for the sport, which drives him to train with remarkable intensity,” said his mother Nicole.

“This victory is not his alone. Archie’s growth is a testament to the support and camaraderie of his coaches and teammates, who continually push him to strive for excellence.

“Under their guidance, Archie has gained the technical skills and mental resilience that set him apart on the mat.

“Without the dedication of his coaches and the encouragement of his team, his success would not be possible.

“Archie has set an extraordinary example for other young athletes and reminds us all that, with passion and perseverance, incredible achievements are within reach.”

Fielding has set his sights on more training and competition opportunities around the world next year.
