Emiliano Martinez shocked fans watching the World Cup final by making a lewd gesture after receiving the Golden Glove award.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper had already written his name into Argentine folklore by saving two penalties in a shootout against the Netherlands at the quarter-final stage and once again stepped up to the plate.
After a breathless 3-3 draw, the final went to the lottery of a shootout, with Martinez saving from Kingsley Coman as Argentina claimed their third world title.
Before the trophy lift, Martinez won the Golden Gloves award, a trophy handed out to the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets. While Jordan Pickford and Morocco’s Bono also finished with three, FIFA’s Technical Study Group awarded it to Martinez.
After picking up his award, Martinez held the trophy – a giant gold-plated hand – to his groin and waved it around as he walked over to join his teammates.
