England star Tom Curry was knocked out cold in concerning scenes during his side's clash with Australia.

The flanker was replaced midway through the first half at the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, after sustaining a head injury while attempting to tackle Wallabies star Rob Valetini.

With his head on the wrong side of the tackle, a knee to the temple sent the Sale star crashing to the turf where he lay motionless, but referee Ben O'Keeffe initially allowed play to continue. However, with Valetini calling for the game to be stopped, the action was then brought to a halt.

Noticing Curry had been knocked unconscious, TNT Sports co-commentator Austin Healey said: "Curry's out. Curry's knocked out. He's unconscious on the floor. Need to stop the game."

Ben Kay, next to him on co-comms, added: "Valetini, the man who did it is actually signalling to the referee, great sportsmanship."

Reviewing the replay, Kay continued: "Head is on the wrong side, knee to the temple isn't it," with Healey adding: "And then a knee when he's fallen as well."

Curry then received treatment on the pitch, with O'Keeffe heard remarking: "Guys, leave him alone, let the medics do their job." Commentator Nick Mullins added: "This might take some time because it looks like Tom Curry was spark out"

Thankfully, Curry was able to get back to his feet and shook hands with Valetini as he made his way off the pitch to be replaced by Alex Dombrandt. At the time, England led 15-3 thanks to a double from Chandler Cunningham-South.

"Not the change England would have wanted to make," added Kay. "Everyone's thoughts at the moment are with Tom Curry. Good to see him back up on his feet and able to walk off under his own steam, a very sad end to the game for him.

"Look at that - ultimate respect, Valentini the man to draw the referee's attention to the fact that the man who tried to tackle him had been knocked out. Lovely to see that."
