Enzo Maresca still contacts his former Leicester City players with the Chelsea manager forever thankful for their Championship-winning season together.

As he prepares for his first return to City since leaving the King Power Stadium hotseat in the summer, Maresca said he has a “special connection” with the squad who secured the second-tier title under his tutelage. Several players described Maresca as the best manager they had worked under, and the Italian says he keeps in touch.

He is also excited to return to the club this Saturday to meet those he formed bonds with during his year in charge. He says caring people like City chairman Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha and his family are rare in the game.

“First of all, I’m excited and also thankful because it was a fantastic season,” Maresca said at his press conference on Thursday when discussing the prospect of returning to the King Power Stadium. “There I met people that are very difficult to find in football.

“The owner, his family, they are fantastic people, fantastic human beings. They care for players, staff and all the people who work inside the club. You can see that.

“In terms of the players, it was top, it was fantastic. There was a fantastic connection between the players and the staff and that’s something you need to create when you want to reach something important.

“I will be thankful all of my life to that squad. Most of them, I’m still in contact with them, so we have a special connection. For me, it was a fantastic season.”

While Maresca knows much of the City squad inside out, the City players know his tactics, making for an intriguing contest on Saturday. Maresca believes City have the advantage on that front.

“They know exactly what we do,” he added. “We’re going to try to adjust small details to see if we can do something different. I think it’s more from their side that they know us better than we know them.”
