Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has backed Ruben Amorim to succeed at Manchester United.

Earlier this week, the 39-year-old was named as United's sixth manager of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

But he won't begin his duties at Old Trafford until November 11, as part of the two clubs' agreement insisted he remained in Lisbon to oversee Sporting CP's forthcoming games against Manchester City and Braga.

If United had agreed an alternative deal with Sporting CP, then there's a chance Amorim would have been in the dugout for Sunday afternoon's Premier League clash against Chelsea at Old Trafford (4.30pm).

But that wasn't to be the case and, as a result, the Portuguese tactician's first game in charge will come vs newly- promoted Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Sunday, November 24.

However, that hasn't stopped Chelsea head coach Maresca from piling praise on United's appointment - insisting he's a huge fan of Amorim's style of play and what he should bring to United.

"Ruben Amorim will do a great job for Manchester United. I've watched many Sporting games - and know the way they play," said Maresca. "It's a fantastic style with how they defend, the way they attack so - for sure - I don't have any doubt that he's going to do a great job."

Amorim was convinced to become Erik ten Hag's successor at Old Trafford and will join from Sporting CP - where he masterminded the club's first league title win in 19 years in 2021.

The 39-year-old was even tipped as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City - but he has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with United following Ten Hag's sacking.

He also has the option of another 12 months beyond that.
