Europa League draw LIVE: Liverpool and West Ham learn quarter-final fate

Liverpool will face Italian opposition in the Europa League quarter-finals in the form of Atalanta, while fellow Premier League side West Ham will take on one of the toughest teams remaining in the competition – Bayer Leverkusen – after the draw took place at Uefa’s headquarters in Nyon this afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are the slight favourites to win the tournament after thrashing Sparta Prague 11-2 in the last 16 and will play Atalanta in the quarter-finals with the first leg at Anfield, while West Ham overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit to down Freiburg this week but now face another German side, with the mammoth task of Xabi Alonso’s all-conquering Leverkusen in front of them.

The first quarter-final drawn out was a tasty all-Italian clash between AC Milan and Roma, where the sides will renew a rivalry that has seen them both climb into Serie A’s top five this season, while Benfica of Portugal and French side Marseille will also do battle for a spot in the semi-finals.

If Liverpool were to beat Atalanta, they would take on the winner of Benfica-Marseille for a place in the final, while the Hammers’ reward for upsetting the odds against a Leverkusen side that haven’t lost a single game this season would be a semi-final against AC Milan or Roma.

Arsenal will face Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals after the draw on Friday.

The Gunners defeated Porto on penalties in the last-16 to progress to the quarters for the first time in 14 years.

And Friday’s draw pitted them against an old foe in Bayern Munich, with former Tottenham star Harry Kane returning to north London in his first season at the German champions.

But who will Arsenal face in the semi-finals should they beat Bayern?

Recap: Europa League draw

12:58 , Lawrence Ostlere

Liverpool were drawn against Italian side Atalanta in the last eight of the Europa League.

The sides’ only previous encounters were in the Champions League group stage in 2020-21, with the Reds beating Atalanta 5-0 in Bergamo but then losing 2-0 to them at Anfield.

West Ham face a tough challenge against Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who are unbeaten in 37 matches in all competitions this season under their highly-rated coach Xabi Alonso.

Liverpool and West Ham cannot meet until the final in Dublin after the semi-final draw also kept the Premier League teams apart.

The last-eight ties will be played on April 11 and 18, with the final scheduled for Wednesday, May 22.

Paris St Germain and Barcelona will go head to head in the last eight, as will Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

The quarter-final first legs will be played on April 9 and 10, with the second legs the following week. The semi-finals take place on April 30 and May 1, with the return legs on May 7 and 8. Wembley will host the final on Saturday, June 1.

City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain is relishing the clash with Real and said: “We have been playing them a while now in the last few seasons. We all remember when we beat them in the semi-final last year - it was amazing. Last season when we played them at home in the second leg we played a top, top game.

“We know how strong they are - they are top of the league. They have good players, play good football and they have one of the best players in the world.”

Asked if City could retain their title, Begiristain said: “Yes, why not? We are doing very well in this competition and winning the games. Mentally, we are strong and top in confidence.

“We are going to need it to beat Real Madrid. We are confident - in the last years we’ve been fighting for this competition and last year we won it. We hope we can keep the winning run going.”

Recap: Champions League draw

A reminder of what happened earlier in the Champions League draw, where Manchester City were handed a Champions League quarter-final blockbuster against 14-time European champions Real Madrid.

The teams have met at the semi-final stage in the last two seasons, with City hammering Real 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium last season on their way to winning their first Champions League title.

Arsenal have been drawn against six-time European champions Bayern Munich, whose star striker Harry Kane is the former talisman of their bitter north London rivals Tottenham.

The Gunners have lost each of their last three meetings with Bayern 5-1, so will be hoping for much better this time around.

City and Arsenal will meet in the semi-finals if they can negotiate their tricky quarter-final ties.

The semi-final draw sees Liverpool get a pretty good route to the final in Dublin. Going by the odds before the draw, it doesn’t get much easier than that for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

That of course means that it doesn’t get much harder for West Ham, other than the fact that they would not meet Liverpool until the final. David Moyes’s team are going to have to do it the hard way.

The bookies are in no doubt over who are the favourites to win the Europa League. Liverpool are in the hunt for four trophies, having already won the Carabao Cup, and this competition might just be their most likely source of more silverware.

Leverkusen, though, are on an extraordinary unbeaten streak of 37 games and are almost certain to win the Bundesliga. No one will want to face them in the quarter-finals. It would make some good #narrative if Xabi Alonso was drawn against the club he has been so heavily linked with.

How they got here: Kudus scores stunner as five-star West Ham ease through

11:48 , Lawrence Ostlere

David Moyes took the handbrake off West Ham and watched them race into the last eight of the Europa League with a 5-0 win over Freiburg.

Hammers boss Moyes uncharacteristically named an attacking line-up in a bid to repair the damage of the 1-0 first-leg defeat in Germany last week.

He was rewarded with a sparkling display as goals from Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen, Aaron Cresswell and two from Mohammed Kudus – including a sensational solo effort – secured a 5-1 aggregate win and a place in a European quarter-final for a third-successive season.

The other big draw is the prospect of Real Madrid taking on Manchester City, in a clash worthy of the Champions League final.

Harry Kane returns to north London to face Arsenal

11:28 , Lawrence Ostlere

Harry Kane’s return to north London to take on Arsenal is undoubtedly one of the headlines of the quarter-final draw. He has been magnificent since joining Bayern Munich in the summer, with a ridiculous 36 goals in 34 games, not to mention a bunch of assists too.

But Bayern have been stuttering – the Bundesliga title is almost over with Bayer Leverkusen way out in front, and manager Thomas Tuchel will leave the club at the end of the season. Tuchel has the experience of winning this competition before, but Arsenal will certainly fancy their chances against Bayern over two legs. It’s a mouthwatering prospect.

How the Champions League draw works

For the first time in the Champions League this season, it’s an open draw. There are no seeded teams and anyone can play anyone.

The draw will reveal not just the quarter-final fixtures, but the possible semi-final ties as well.

It will be the last time Uefa holds a Champions League draw manually, with the procedure changing to a computerised system when the competition switches formats next season.

News: Vinicius Jr calls on Uefa to punish Atletico fans for alleged racist abuse

10:39 , Lawrence Ostlere

Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr has called on Uefa to punish Atletico Madrid fans for alleged racist chanting ahead of their team’s Champions League match against Inter Milan on Wednesday.

A video posted on social media appears to show Atletico fans outside the Metropolitano stadium in Madrid chanting racist abuse targeting the Real Madrid forward.

“I hope you’ve already thought about their punishment Champions League, Uefa,” Vinicius said on social media platform X on Thursday. “It’s a sad reality this happens even at matches I’m not at.”

The Madrid winger has been the target of racist abuse on a number of occasions, sparking a series of local and international campaigns, including the creation of a special Fifa anti-racism committee.

“If the chants took place within the stadium or its precinct, then the disciplinary body will assess reports from the match,” a UEFA spokesperson said in an email to Reuters.

Brazil will play a friendly match against Spain at the Bernabeu on 26 March as part of an anti-racism campaign in support of the Real Madrid forward.

Analysis: It isn’t about the celebrations – Arsenal’s Champions League progress shows a crucial step is behind them

10:26 , Lawrence Ostlere

Mikel Arteta tried to put on a managerial demeanour as he congratulated his players on going the distance and beating Porto, but ultimately, he couldn’t keep the joyous smile off his face. It was all too visible as he came out of the dressing room and then sat down in front of the media.

Arteta was thrilled.

Those who speak of the exacting standards of winners might say that’s a bit much for a mere Champions League last-16 penalty shootout victory over a side Arsenal should be beating fairly easily, in the way this side have generally had their celebrations policed.

There was obviously much more to it than that. It wasn’t even that the club had reached the quarter-finals, either. It was that the team had made another crucial step, with this one admittedly a giant leap.

English clubs set for extra Champions League spot next season

10:17 , Lawrence Ostlere

The Premier League’s hopes of gaining an extra Champions League spot in next season’s revamped competition were given a major boost on Thursday following West Ham United’s crucial win over Freiburg.

The Champions League is being expanded to a 36-team tournament from 2024/25 and two of the extra four places will be awarded to countries whose teams perform best in this season’s European competitions.

As confirmed by Uefa on its website, England currently sits third in the race, behind Italy and Germany, which would mean Serie A and the Bundesliga receive a fifth Champions League place next season.

But the margin between Germany and England shrunk after Thursday’s Europa League results, and England – who have five teams left in European competition this season compared to Germany’s three – are almost certain to overtake Germany and steal that extra Champions League spot.

Champions League 2023-24 top scorers

10:10 , Lawrence Ostlere

There are four players out in front in the race for the Champions League golden boot this season – Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Antoine Griezmann. That’s not a bad list of European forwards, is it.

Of those players still in the competition, Griezmann’s Atletico teammate Alvaro Morata is one behind with five goals, as is Haaland’s City teammate Julian Alvarez.

6 – Harry Kane (Bayern), Kylian Mbappe (PSG), Erling Haaland (Man City), Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid).

5 – Rasmus Hojlund (Man United)*, Alvaro Morata (Atletico Madrid), Galeno (Porto)*, Julian Alvarez (Man City).

4 – Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Evanilson (Porto)*, Phil Foden (Man City), Gabriel Jesus (Arsenal), Lois Openda (Leipzig)*, Danylo Sikan (Shakhtar)*, Ciro Immobile (Lazio)*.

What will the Champions League look like next season?

09:59 , Lawrence Ostlere

Perhaps the new Champions League format, which begins next season, could solve the problem.

Since 2003, the Champions League has been a 32-team competition with a single group-stage phase followed by a knockout phase. The 32 teams, seeded according to league position and Uefa coefficient, have been split into eight groups of four, with the top two teams progressing to the last-16 after six rounds of matches in a round-robin format with both home and away matches. That has then been followed by three two-legged rounds, the last-16, quarter-finals and semi-finals, with matches played home and away, before the final at a neutral venue.

From 2024, the group stage will look completely different.

There are two main changes: four additional teams will be added to take the number of clubs up to 36, and a single league format will be used. The league phase will determine an overall ranking - from 1st to 36th, with three points for a win and one for a draw as usual. The top eight teams will advance to the last 16, with the 16 teams finishing between ninth and 24th entering the play-off round over two legs, with a victory securing passage to the last 16. Teams who finish 25th or below will be eliminated and will not drop down to the Europa League.

‘The Champions League has gone stale'

09:44 , Lawrence Ostlere

After eight heavyweight clubs reached the quarter-finals, has the Champions League become too predictable?

It is only becoming as predictable as many domestic leagues, writes chief football writer Miguel Delaney. Profit has been prioritised over the health of the game, leading to growing financial disparities that are now beginning to existentially threaten the sport’s lifeblood of unpredictability.

Put bluntly, the immense money the game generates goes to too few places, meaning it almost becomes irrelevant what it earns other than how damaging it becomes.

How they got here: Dortmund win do-or-die game with PSV

09:27 , Lawrence Ostlere

Jadon Sancho scored for the second consecutive match to help fire Borussia Dortmund into the last eight with a 2-0 win over PSV.

After a 1-1 draw in Eindhoven last month, it was a winner-takes-all tie at Westfalenstadion and the hosts made the perfect start. Only three minutes were on the clock when PSV failed to clear their lines and Julian Brandt teed up Sancho, who took a touch before he curled into the bottom corner for his second goal since moving on loan from Manchester United in January.

The big moment for PSV occurred deep into stoppage time when Luuk de Jong played a one-two with Jordan Teze and had only Gregor Kobel to beat, but blazed over and seconds later it was 2-0. From the resulting free kick, a slip by Isaac Babadi allowed Reus a clear run at goal and Dortmund’s talisman slotted home to clinch their place in the quarter-finals.

How they got here: Oblak heroics save Atletico against Inter

09:12 , Lawrence Ostlere

Jan Oblak was the hero for Atletico Madrid as they beat Inter Milan on penalties to progress into the Champions League quarter-finals.

Inter, who reached the final of last year’s competition, went ahead at the Wanda Metropolitano through Federico Dimarco, but Diego Simeone’s team showed their usual never-say-die spirit.

Antoine Griezmann levelled instantly and a late effort by Memphis Depay sent the last-16 tie to extra-time where spot-kicks were required.

Oblak starred with saves to deny Sanchez and Klaassen before Inter captain Martinez drilled his spot-kick off target to hand Atletico a 3-2 win on penalties.

How they got here: Lewandowski puts seal on Barcelona’s win over Napoli

08:59 , Lawrence Ostlere

Barcelona reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in four years after a thrilling 3-1 home win over Napoli in their last-16 second leg gave them a deserved 4-2 aggregate victory.

Early goals by Fermin Lopez and Joao Cancelo set the hosts on their way and, after Amir Rrahmani cut the deficit before the break, Robert Lewandowski wrapped up the win with a late third.

Napoli had never beaten Barca in their previous five meetings and it turned out to be a repeat of the 2020 Champions League meeting with a 3-1 home win for the Spanish side after a 1-1 draw in Naples.

That was the last time the Catalans had won a knockout stage game in the competition and their most recent qualification for the last eight.

How they got here: Raya pulls out the stops to end Arsenal’s long wait

08:36 , Lawrence Ostlere

David Raya pulls out the stops, so Arsenal keep going. They used every drop of energy that Mikel Arteta demanded to squeeze past Porto by single kick and make their first Champions League quarter-final since 2010. That came from the first Champions League shootout since the 2015-16 final. Raya made one brilliant save from Galeno and a relatively lucky one from Wendell, the second more forceful enough and fittingly sending Arsenal through.

In such situations, there might be questions about the physical and mental cost of such a game, but Arteta’s side now don’t have another game for 19 days. They also have something uniquely positive to think about, after smashing a real block in this most illustrious of competitions. Not even Arsene Wenger got this far very often. Arteta has done it in his first go.

How they got here: Underwhelming Real Madrid edge past Leipzig

Real Madrid saw off RB Leipzig to advance to the last eight of the Champions League, despite an underwhelming performance.

The home side were jeered at times by their own supporters during the 1-1 draw with Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabeu. But a 1-0 win away from home in the first leg ensured that a draw with enough to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Vinicius Jr clipped home Jude Bellingham’s pass to go ahead in the tie during the second half, and although captain Willi Orban scored for Leipzig a few minutes later, converting one of their many chances, they could not score another to force extra time.

Manchester City made short work of FC Copenhagen with a 3-1 second-leg win at the Etihad Stadium to complete a 6-2 aggregate victory.

Manuel Akanji, Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland ensured it was an easy night for Pep Guardiola’s men.

Everything you need to know about the Champions League draw

07:45 , Luke Baker

Arsenal and Manchester City await a blockbuster Champions League draw as the path to the Wembley final is revealed.

This year’s final will be held at Wembley Stadium in June with Manchester City hoping to secure another tournament crown. Pep Guardiola’s side won their first European Cup by beating Inter Milan in Istanbul last year and progressed to the quarter-finals thanks to a 6-2 aggregate win over FC Copenhagen.

Arsenal were able to overturn a 1-0 first-leg defeat to Porto - but they needed the first Champions League penalty shoot-out since the 2016 final as they returned to the last-eight for the first time since 2010 on a dramatic night at the Emirates.

They are joined in the last-eight by star-studded line-up of some of European football’s biggest names, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund their potential quarter-final opponents.

The draw will reveal not just the quarter-final fixtures, but the possible semi-final ties as well. It will be the last time Uefa holds a Champions League draw manually, with the procedure changing to a computerised system when the competition switches formats next season.

Here’s everything you need to know.

When is the Champions League quarter-final draw?

How they got here: Mbappe fires PSG past Real Sociedad

07:44 , Lawrence Ostlere

Kylian Mbappe’s brace saw Paris Saint-Germain cruise into the quarter-finals, with a 2-1 win at Real Sociedad completing a 4-1 aggregate victory.

With a 2-0 lead in their pocket from the first leg, PSG were comfortable throughout.

Mbappe, the top scorer across Europe’s top five leagues so far this season, offered an early warning sign when he turned a shot narrowly over the bar from Fabian Ruiz’s cut-back in the fifth minute.

PSG were the dominant force and went ahead after 15 minutes through Mbappe’s fifth Champions League goal of the season, bending the ball across goal and inside the far post.

Mbappe punished Sociedad again 11 minutes into the second half, bursting on to Lee Kang-in’s through ball and whipping the ball in majestically at the near post. Mikel Merino scored a consolation for Sociedad a minute from time.

How they got here: Kane leads Bayern past Lazio after first-leg defeat

07:27 , Lawrence Ostlere

Harry Kane fired Bayern Munich into the quarter-finals of the Champions League as the German side overturned a first-leg deficit against Lazio with a 3-0 win at the Allianz Arena.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Rome, Bayern were kept out until Kane headed home from close range – his 50th goal in European competition. Thomas Muller doubled the lead on the night with another header seconds before the break, and Kane sealed their progress after Leroy Sane’s shot was parried into the path of the England captain, who had to adjust his feet sharply to score his second on the night and 33rd Bayern goal in as many appearances.
