Nottingham Forest showed their strength of character as they came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 on the banks of the Trent.

Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo pointed to the “amazing reaction” of his players in a victory which took the Reds up to fourth in the Premier League table. And the Portuguese also acknowledged the part played by the City Ground crowd in helping the hosts turn the game around.

Jhon Duran had put Villa in front just past the hour mark, less than three minutes after Nicolas Dominguez had been denied by an unbelievable Emi Martinez save. When Chris Wood had a goal ruled out for an offside against substitute Anthony Elanga, it would have been easy for Forest to think it wasn’t going to be their day. However, Nikola Milenkovic got an equaliser in the closing minutes and Elanga went on to bag the winner in added time.

Talk of a push for European football will not go away if the Reds can maintain this kind of form. Nuno is determined to remain level-headed but did concede Saturday’s victory merited a few beers and an extra day off for his squad. Below is a look at what the Portuguese had to say after the final whistle.

On coming from behind to win…

“It says a lot about the character, especially after what happened in the game. Both teams were very equal in the first half; both very organised with no gaps. Villa tried to control us and we tried to control them. We allowed possession to them and they allowed possession to us but without threat - for both teams, except with set-pieces.

“The moment of the game was an amazing save from Martinez, then Villa went and scored. After that, the reaction of the players was amazing. The help of the fans was huge.

“Chris had a goal ruled out and it could have been game over, but it went the other way. The fans reacted, helped the team and the boys started running and running. We achieved a huge moment for all of us.”

On whether Forest can continue to compete at the top end of the table…

“We are competing against all the teams in the Premier League. It's not about that, it's about preparing for the next one, focusing on the task ahead of you and realising that you didn't achieve anything.

“Today is a big moment, let's enjoy it together - all the fans and players. Enjoy it, have a beer.

“But we know that Brentford next is going to be so tough. You just look at them at home and how many goals they score. I am now trying to work on that; that is what is most important, game by game.

“I think we should enjoy, because they are special moments - the previous game (victory over Manchester United) and today. Enjoy them especially because we want to do it together - us and the fans. Today was very special. It was very, very special so thank you.”

On Elanga scoring…

“I think it means a lot for him. We have been asking for more actions from him.

“But more than just Anthony, I think it means a lot for the squad to realise and understand that it doesn’t matter if you start or not. It really doesn’t matter.

“We realise when we make subs that energy from the bench is so important. Anthony had a big impact today and others did the same in previous games.

“What can you say about (Willy) Boly, for example? He has not been involved for so long but he comes in and was so influential in the game, saving us in the last minutes.

“As long as we understand that - and I keep insisting to you guys and to them - I think we can compete. I think we can compete, because it is about the squad.”

On Milenkovic scoring in success games…

“I hope it continues. He did really well besides just the goal. He gives something special to the team.”

On Wood’s goal being chalked off…

“It took a long time because it was a very close decision. But it changed it, because I think it flipped the game.

“We reacted to that incident, and reacted amazing. That is why I have given them one day more off, because they truly deserve it - especially after the two difficult away games and a hard week. Now they can rest for the next one.”

On Martinez’s save…

“I was upset in that moment! It was a big save. Remarkable.

“That’s not about anything technical, it is pure instinct and reflexes. It was amazing. I wish I had the quality to do that once but I didn’t!”

On whether Villa were impacted by playing in Europe in midweek…

“It is very difficult. I don’t know if there was a clear impact on the game because Villa had three days to recover and I believe after 72 hours the players have totally recovered.

"But it is a huge ask playing in the Champions League and then in the Premier League, which is equally or maybe even harder than the Champions League. That is why I give credit to Villa, they are amazing.”

On picking up a couple of knocks…

“Murillo and Yates both did. I don’t know what, I think twisted ankles and big impacts. Hopefully nothing serious but we will assess.”
