Every word Ruben Amorim said on Man United, Viktor Gyokeres and Sporting after Man City thrashing
There are ways to introduce yourself to Manchester United fans and then there are ways to introduce yourself to Manchester United fans. Ruben Amorim could hardly have had a better send-off.
Even though his Sporting side still have one more game to play under his stewardship before a move to Old Trafford is completed, this was the big one. Not only was it narratively perfect - welcoming Pep Guardiola and Manchester City on a glorious Champions League evening - it was a demonstration of dominance.
This is the sort of result Sporting have been used to in Portugal under Amorim. It is why they have won the league twice since he arrived having gone nearly two decades without lifting the title previously. It is why he leaves them in a strong spot to finish top again this season.

Understandably, Amorim has attracted plenty of attention. After beating City 4-1, that is only going to ramp up even more. Here, Manchester Evening News has everything he said post-game on Wednesday from a variety of interviews with English and Portuguese media, hence some repetition and translated parts.
The perfect way to say goodbye?
Yes, looking at the game, it was written, because in the first half it was very tough on us. We were very lucky. But then the second half, we scored twice in the first minutes and the environment, everything helping us. It was an amazing night. A good moment.
We all deserve it here, the board, the fans, we start so low four years ago so it's amazing.
What did you change at half-time?
Lucky. A little bit more lucky because the 2-1 and 3-1 was nothing tactical, it was so fast in the first play, second play, it was nothing. We changed a bit, the pressure, in the second half, closed more in the middle.
We let [Franciso] Trincao cover [Mateo] Kovacic. We improve. Then 3-1 all the environment pushes us to the end of the game.
Gyokeres is amazing, seven goals in his last two games, are you tempted to bring him with you?
No, no no. I cannot be funny with that. In this moment it was tough for me to leave, if I am starting joking about that with your cameras I have problems. This is my city, this is my country so I will respect [that].
Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life is going, maybe, somewhere else.
What did you make of the tifo and everything the fans did for you tonight? Did it make you emotional when you walk out?
Yes, a little bit. I think the victory helps a lot. I think I am going in peace to another challenge. It was a great night. I love these fans and I was a Benfica supporter since I was a kid. I play in Benfica but these fans are amazing, it was an amazing journey, and now after Sunday, I will start a new one with a new club.
We need to play these clubs in a different way, we can't defend like this, so I have to improve as a coach but I am very happy and it was a great night.

You've got a good start against Pep [Guardiola], are you looking forward to these battles?
It's not a start because we had the game here two years ago, it was 5-1 [to City]. He's in front of the battle and so much better than me at the moment but I believe a lot in my newest club and we will start from a low level, maybe, I can say that, and we will improve the team, the club, so let's see.
Congratulations, Sir Alex [Ferguson]. How did it feel tonight, with the send off from the players and fans? What message does that send to the Premier League with that performance?
It's misleading. We were very lucky today in the game, like I was explaining. The feeling with my players, the way they celebrate this win, the moment with the fans was very, very special. I bring this to the Premier League. When I arrive there it's a different world, a different pressure.
I will try and be the same so we will fun, very fun. I am ready for the challenge.
What does this result mean for Manchester United?
What I can tell you is that this doesn't mean anything in particular - don’t take anything from this. We cannot transport one reality to another. Manchester Untied cannot play the way we play and we will have to adapt.
Your best moment as Sporting manager?
Was this my best moment at Sporting? No. The best moment was when we lost 5-0 here against City and at the end the fans applauded us off the pitch. They knew we were on the right path.
How about that Sir Alex Ferguson comment from yesterday?
That was a joke. I’m certainly not going to read anything for six months. I did the same at Sporting. I’m not going to read anything or have access to anything. It’s the only way to do my job and things well.
What did the fans' ovation mean to you?
[Transalated] I'll take it all in. It was the best time of my life. We had some very difficult days. We started from a very low point and today we had a fantastic night, with the little star, which also marked the time of this coaching team here. I couldn't have asked for a better night.
The result? It's a bit misleading. We're from a team in a league outside the top five leagues. We're going to have to go head to head against these types of teams there. It's always better to win than to lose and that way people will be more eager to see the coach there.
How were the final moments?
[Translated] I thank everybody for the victory. If we hadn't won the match then the moment wouldn't be so nice but of course with a victory over Manchester City it is better. Four years ago we lost here to LASK and today we got this result.
The way players celebrated with me, raising me in the air, I wouldn't expect anything else from them because they know what I did for them and I know what they did for me. I am going to keep these memories forever. Today I cannot enjoy them fully but it was a beautiful moment, it was written on the wall that this is the way I should say farewell.
Those of you who were here and saw the Sporting of the past four years deserve a night like this one. It was a very special night but we shouldn't stop here and look at this victory as something that is one. We know it is special because of the circumstances but we have to think about the next match against Braga.
You have been heavily praised by most fans, how are you handling that and did your son interfere with you leaving?
[Translated] I'm very happy with those words. I think you've always treated me with respect and have always been fair with me. It was mutual. You had to criticize when you had to criticize. Often it's not your fault. It's a matter of taste. But I believe it was mutual, not just on my side.
My son is a Sporting fan and will continue to be. When we came to Alvalade, he didn't have to say anything because I'm the boss at home, so I didn't have to say anything, it's his mother, really. As for the fans, I've already said that it was the best moment of my life. I want to thank them for everything.
Are you the best coach in Sporting history?
[Translated] It's much harder to replace a coach who is winning. The coach who comes in will have a good legacy. Above all, he will have a structured club, which has won in recent years, and an intelligent public that will understand that it will be necessary to give the next coach time to fine-tune some things.
It's one of Sporting's best phases. It was a difficult time. But everyone pulled in all directions. Let's say that I was part of one of Sporting's best moments.
Can you take tips from this game into the Premier League and to play City again?
[Translated] We are a Portuguese team that has had a lot of difficulties. In the last four years we have changed the squad a lot and we are allowed to play this way, waiting for the opponent. When I am at the next club, the approach will have to be different.
I can understand the dynamics of the team better, but I can't take much from this because we will have to play differently in the future. They are both historic clubs. It will certainly be a different game.
Looking at the game, what we had today was luck, whereas in other years we didn't have it. Looking only at this game, what changed a lot was luck, which made the game fall to us.
I would have been much worse off if we had lost today and now we will see Braga. The club follows its path, I follow mine. I am sure of the path I have taken.
