Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy thinks the Reds should target Alphonso Davies as competition for Andy Robertson.

Robertson turned 30 earlier this year and Murphy encouraged the Reds to dip into the transfer market to find Robertson's long-term replacement, naming Bayern Munich's Davies as the obvious choice.

Davies, 24, is out of contract at Bayern at the end of the season and will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with non-German clubs from January 1.

Real Madrid has been linked with a move for Davies next summer, while he could yet pen an extension in Bavaria, but Liverpool is being urged to explore a possible deal.

Speaking to BetBrain, Murphy said: “Considering what Andy Robertson has done for Liverpool and the level of performances he’s delivered over the years, he’s now in the conversation when people talk about the best left-backs Liverpool have ever had,” he said. “There’s been some incredible left-backs in some unbelievable Liverpool teams, so let’s praise him for what he’s done in his career – he’s a winner and phenomenal player.

“However, I don’t think Konstantinos Tsimikas is ever going to replace Robertson or play instead of him on a consistent basis, so I think Robertson and Liverpool would benefit from him having real competition at left-back and for Arne Slot to look long term at the position. There’d be plenty of competition, but Alphonso Davies is out of contract at Bayern Munich in the summer. If you’re looking for a left-back that ticks every box in terms of one-on-one defending, threat going forward, pace and physicality, he would be the obvious choice for Liverpool.”

Arne Slot has rotated Robertson and Tsimikas in the opening weeks of the season, but an injury to Tsimikas in November meant that Robertson started Liverpool's last four matches.

While his overall performances have been good, Robertson has faced criticism after conceding penalties in the wins against Southampton and Real Madrid, and the Reds have been the subject of plenty of speculation linking them with signing a new left-back.

Another left-back Liverpool has been linked with is Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez. The 21-year-old Hungary international, who scored his first goal for Bournemouth over the weekend, is said to be valued at around $50million by the Cherries.
