Fans at Hillsborough witnessed a slice of Hornets history
Supporters who were at Hillsborough on Saturday witnessed a piece of Watford history: the first-ever 6-2 away win.
In fact, the club has only won a match 6-2 on three occasions, and all of those were at home (against Newport County in October 25, 1930; against Coventry City on November 11, 1911; and against Leyton on January 19, 1907).
It was only the 13th time Watford have scored six or more goals in a competitive away match, and three of the others have occurred this century (6-1 at Leeds in 2012, 6-1 at Millwall in 2010 and 7-4 at Burnley in 2003).
They did it twice in games at Aylesbury United way back in April 1899 (7-1) and March 1900 (8-3). In fact, Watford only ever played three competitive matches at Aylesbury, and the other one in the FA Cup in November 1951 ended in a 5-0 Watford win.
Vakoun Bayo was the first Watford player to score four in a game since Odion Ighalo did it at home to Blackpool on January 24, 2015.
That day, the Hornets came back from 2-0 down at half-time to win 7-2 – which eclipsed the five-goal second half salvo on Saturday.
By scoring four in a competitive match, Bayo etched his name alongside 19 other Watford players who have done so.
The club’s greatest player ever, Luther Blissett, did it twice – firstly netting four in the memorable 8-0 win over Sunderland in the first season in the old First Division on September 25, 1982.
Then he hit another foursome at Vicarage Road when Watford beat Sheffield United 5-0 in the FA Cup on January 5, 1985.
Thomas Ashbridge scored four for Watford in a 10-0 win over Bournemouth in the FA Cup in 1913, and then bagged five in a 6-0 Southern League win over West Ham less than five months later!
The last time a Watford player scored four in an away game was on April 5, 2003, when Michael Chopra (on loan from Newcastle) did it in a 7-4 win at Burnley shortly before the Hornets lost the FA Cup semi-final to Southampton.
Josh King scored the most recent away hat-trick for Watford in the 5-2 win at Everton on October 23, 2021.
They were his first three goals for the club, and he only scored two more in the rest of the campaign.
The last time Watford scored two penalties in a match was on July 11, 2020, against Newcastle United in a 2-1 win at Vicarage Road during the Covid hit 2019/20 season. Troy Deeney netted both.
For the last time Watford scored two penalties in an away game you have to go back to April 27, 1982, when Club Ambassador Blissett scored both in a 3-0 win at Crystal Palace. Gerry Armstrong netted the other goal.
Scoring three penalties in two consecutive matches has only occurred three times before in Watford history, and the most recent of those was more than 60 years ago during the 1960/61 season.
Prior to that it happened twice in the same season, the 1959/60 campaign – and Cliff Holton scored all of them!
He scored two penalties in a 3-1 win at Gateshead on November 28, 1959, and followed up with one in the next game, a 5-1 FA Cup win at home to Wycombe Wanderers on December 5, 1959.
What Holton did next is unlikely to ever be repeated though: he scored penalties in consecutive games on consecutive days – and got hat-tricks in both matches!
On Friday April 15, 1960, he scored three including a penalty as Watford beat Chester 4-2 at Vicarage Road, and the next day (Saturday April 16) he netted two penalties as part of a hat-trick in a 5-0 defeat of Gateshead at home.
Holton ended that season with 42 goals in 45 games as Watford finished fourth in the Fourth Division and secured promotion.
Watford's sixth goal against the Owls on Saturday ended a sequence of 17 passes and involved nine of the 10 outfield players (Ken Sema was the one to miss out).
It was the longest passing move leading to a Watford league goal since February 22, 2019, when Deeney rounded off a 26-pass move in the 5-1 win at Cardiff City. Tom Cleverley played as a substitute that night.
Deeney was also among the scorers the last time Watford scored six away from home, which was the 6-1 win at Leeds United on November 10, 2012.
And unsurprisingly Deeney was one of the players involved the last time two hat-tricks were scored in the same season for Watford - he bagged three in the 5-0 win at Fulham in front of the Sky Sports cameras on December 5, 2014, and then there was Igahlo’s in the 7-2 defeat of Blackpool on January 24, 2015.
Watford have only drawn one of their first 16 games this season, the first time that has happened since the start of the 2021/22 season – although there were no draws at all (but 12 defeats) in the first 16 games of the 1999/2000 season.
