Fist-pumps, dancing and Wood on fire - Nottingham Forest revel in big win over Leicester City
Long after the final whistle had blown, the party in the away section was still going on. It was one of those evenings Nottingham Forest fans didn’t want to end.
Their corner of the King Power Stadium had been bouncing from first minute until last - and they weren’t about to stop now the game was over. The songs continued to ring out into the night air. This was a moment to savour and to drink it all in.
Alex Moreno orchestrated the post-match celebrations in front of the travelling supporters, teasing the crowd before unleashing the fist-pumps. Having danced their way through Leicester City, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ola Aina then danced their way off the pitch with the former’s chant ringing in their ears. Anthony Elanga soon joined in.
Add this one to an ever-growing list of magical Premier League moments for the Reds - and there may yet be a fair few more to come this season. There is the feeling this group of players are only just getting started.
Forest went fifth with this win. Fifth! Above Chelsea, Spurs, Newcastle and Manchester United. It might only be temporary, with the rest of the division still to play this weekend’s fixtures, but don’t take anything away from Nuno Espirito Santo’s side - they look like a proper team this year.
Friday night’s 3-1 victory over the Foxes made it a six-point week for the Reds and extended their unbeaten run on the road to seven games. Below, we look at some of the big talking points from the match.
Wood you believe it (again!)
Chris Wood has become one of Forest’s most reliable performers under Nuno. He is also one of the most in-form forwards in the league.
A brilliant brace took him to seven for the season and 22 Premier League goals in total for the club. He is now the Reds’ joint second-highest scorer in the competition - level with Stan Collymore and only two behind Bryan Roy. At this rate, the New Zealander will soon find himself out in front.
“Chris Wood’s on fire, your defence is terrified” was belted out by the away end and an image of the front man mocked up as Robin Hood quickly did the rounds on social media after the game. Meanwhile, Ryan Yates and Neco Williams posted goat emojis alongside pictures of their teammate with his Player of the Match trophy - a way of symbolising the Greatest Of All Time.
In the period Nuno has been in charge of Forest, only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (18) has bagged more non-penalty goals in the Premier League than Wood’s 17. The Reds head coach insisted such form was all down to the player himself, but they really are a match made in heaven.
Nuno is getting the best out of Wood. And along with Haaland, the 32-year-old is seemingly on a mission to ensure the traditional target man role is alive and strong. "We want to try to bring it back or I'll be out of a job," he quipped afterwards.
Tactical tweaks
Wood is just one of a number of players going through a purple patch. Yates is another, with the midfielder deservedly netting his second Premier League goal in the Garibaldi when he opened the scoring in style on Friday night.
And in Nuno, Forest have a head coach who has got his tactics spot on in several games already this season. Even the Portuguese being in the stands as he served the second of a three-match touchline ban didn’t disrupt things for the visitors.
After an entertaining first half which had finished 1-1, Nuno recognised a few adjustments were required for the Reds to get on top. Getting control of midfield was the key area he focused on.
“We saw they were playing a box and we just couldn’t get pressure on either (Harry) Winks or (Ricardo) Pereira, who are good players and are extremely comfortable on the ball,” Yates told Sky Sports afterwards. “We just dropped Elanga or Hudson-Odoi at the right time to match their box, and then we ended up turning the ball over a few times and we’re really good on the transition. It changed the game. Fair play to the gaffer and the lads for implementing it.”
Forest were superb in the second half and could easily have added to their tally. Individuals are playing well, but they also look well-drilled and organised as a unit. Add in their exciting attacking threat and it is a good mix.

Six-point week
Securing a first home win of the season by seeing off Crystal Palace on Monday night was a big tick for the Reds. The absence of a victory at the City Ground was the one small blot on their copybook in the opening stages of the campaign.
Before Friday night, some might have worried about the quick turnaround potentially affecting Nuno’s men. But they soon made light of those concerns.
Having strength in depth helps on that front. Although Nuno stuck with the same XI, despite having James Ward-Prowse available again after suspension, he was able to make good changes to freshen things up.
As was the case in the previous two games, Neco Williams and Morato were entrusted to come on and help see the match out at the back. Ramon Sosa and Jota Silva added energy for the closing stages. And Taiwo Awoniyi got more minutes under his belt as he continues to try to get back to the level he is capable of.
Awoniyi was serenaded by Forest fans when he came on. If anyone could do with a goal, it is the Nigerian. He hit the sidenetting with one effort, but getting him firing again must be the next challenge for Nuno.
Moving on
Pre-match, much of the wider coverage going into this game surrounded the man in the home dugout. This was the first time the Reds had come up against former head coach Steve Cooper since his sacking last December.
But this fixture was never really about one person, and to put the spotlight on Cooper was to miss how well Forest have done so far this season. That point was only underlined further come full-time.
The away end sung Cooper’s name in the second half, just as they had done on their last visit to the King Power Stadium - when the Welshman was in the away dugout and on the end of a 4-0 thumping. This time, the chant came in a different context. It was swiftly followed by cries of “Nuno, Nuno, Nuno”.
Cooper will always be an integral part of the Reds’ history, but football moves on; now it is all about the present and moving forward. Back-to-back home fixtures in the next couple of weeks represent a real opportunity to push on.
Tougher tests are on the horizon for Forest, with trips to Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United to come after the next international break. But for now, it is all about enjoying the moment.
