Former Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has taken the next steps in his move towards becoming a coach. The 32-year-old, who now plays for Al-Jazira in the United Arab Emirates, only has one more badge left to do.

Having struggled with injuries for the final few seasons during his time at the Emirates Stadium, Elneny ended his seven-and-a-half year stay at Arsenal when his contract expired in July. He has since gone on to play every minute possible for his new club so far this season, scoring one goal and assisting another.

In total, he made 161 appearances for the Gunners - heading out on loan to Besiktas for a season in the middle. Arsenal did renew his contract to help him through a period out with long-term injury, but waved him goodbye earlier this year.

Now, as he looks to put together contingency plans for life beyond his playing days, Elneny has confirmed the completion of his latest coaching badge. "So proud to announce that I successfully earned my UEFA A Licence [football and university hat emojis]," he wrote on Instagram.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to develop my coaching skills and knowledge and I'm very excited for the journey ahead as I continue to grow and make a positive impact in the world of football!

"Thank you @bridgo18 [Dave Bridges] for all your help and support [heart and raised hands emojis]".

Elneny started his journey while at Arsenal, working alongside Bridges, who is assistant manager at Lincoln City. Bridges was also behind the early progress of Aaron Ramsdale and Jorginho as they started their own pathways into coaching.

Participants going through the UEFA system must complete C, B and A badges before completing the Pro diploma. That is the next step for Elneny, should he wish to take it on, and requires him to have at least one year of coaching experience after finishing the A licence at elite youth, senior amateur level, or as an assistant in the pro game.
