Former Manchester United talent Angel Gomes - who has recently been linked with a return transfer to the club - has penned a statement explaining why he is to undergo surgery on a persistent injury.

After rising through the age groups at Old Trafford from six-years-old to 16, Gomes made 10 senior appearances for Man United. Unfortunately the lack of opportunities forced him to make the decision to move away and kickstart his career with French club Lille.

There he has finally flourished, playing 129 matches for the club to the point where he was recognised by Lee Carsley to join the senior England squad this year. Alongside that achievement came suggestion that his former club will look to set up a reunion next year.

Although for now, the 24-year-old will be working to recover from his latest setback. On Instagram, his statement read: "For the past few months I have been dealing with an injury that has deeply affected my ability to perform at the level I hold myself to.

"Those who know me understand how much I love playing this game and what it means to me. Not being able to give my best on the pitch has been incredibly frustrating.

"After working closely with the medical team, we've decided that the best course of action is to treat the injury and fully focus on rehabilitation to secure a complete recovery."

Gomes added: "This was a difficult decision because all I want to do is play and help the team in every way possible. But it's the right choice to make sure I come back better and stronger. I'm fully committed to putting in the work during this rehab period and do everything I can to be back out there on the pitch where I belong.

"Your support means everything to me, and I'm grateful for your patience and understanding. Thank you for sticking with me through this period. See you soon! Allez le Losc."

Attacking midfielder Gomes had made 15 appearances this term for Lille, scoring and assisting once each. It is not yet clarified when he will be able to return, though this injury will undoubtedly eat away at the time he has left in France.

As was the case at Man United five years ago, his contract at Pierre Mauroy Stadium is set to expire at the end of the season. From January foreign clubs will be able to enter pre-agreement negotiations for his free transfer on July 1, 2025.
