The United States Women's National Team had their home-game winning streak come to an end after suffering a stunning 2-0 loss to Mexico in a Concacaf W Gold Cup group stage match. This was the first time that the USWNT had lost to Mexico since 2010, and the first time in the United States.

Mexico’s two goals came from Lizbeth Ovalle finding the net in the first half and Mayra Pelayo securing the victory in extra time.

With seven points, Mexico finished at the top of Group A standings, followed by the USA with six points and Argentina with four points. Unfortunately, the Dominican Republic was eliminated from the tournament.

There is a lot of scrutiny and debate going on after the recent loss of the US Women's National Team, which has raised questions about the current position of the USWNT.

Media Reaction from USWNT's loss to Mexico

Ali Krieger: USWNT loss is a reality check

Former USWNT two-time World Cup champion Ali Krieger said on a CBS Sports Golazo segment that the USWNT is in a “needs to turn it around or go home situation.”

“This is a game where you have to show up, and if you don’t show up, then you do not continue,” Krieger said. “They need to look at the little details that can get better, and they will be able to turn it around for the next stage.”

Former USWNT Carli Lloyd: USWNT lacks of motivation

Carli Lloyd, former USWNT World Cup winner midfielder and 2015 FIFA Women's World Player of the Year, tweeted to praise Mexico's performance and criticize the current team.

"Mexico was exceptional. Best I've seen from them in a long time. Confident, brave, relentless, organized and hungry!" Lloyd said.

During a criticism of the USWNT, Lloyd stated that a "lack of motivation crept in during 2020, giving other teams the confidence that they can beat the US team."

ESPN’s Sebastian Salazar: A major blow to this team's confident

During a recent segment on SportsCenter, Sebastian Salazar analyzed the impact of the US women's soccer team's loss to Mexico on their preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Salazar expressed his concerns regarding the United States' performance against Mexico. The US team had 60% possession of the ball but only managed to take two shots on goal, which is a worrisome statistic.

“It is particularly concerning because Mexico is not a powerhouse in soccer and did not qualify for the last World Cup,” said Salazar.

Salazar’s co-host of ‘Ahora o Nunca’ on ESPN, Herculez Gomez, took to X, formally known as Twitter, to share his thoughts on the victory for Mexico.

“Massive performance from Mexico. Dos a Cero. Significant Win.”
