Former Town boss sacked by League One side after winning just two of 19 games

History-making ex-Ipswich Town boss Paul Hurst has been sacked by League One Shrewsbury Town with the side mired in relegation trouble.

Hurst, who lasted just 15 games as Blues boss after arriving from the Shrews in the summer of 2018 - the shortest-ever tenure for a Town manager - has been given his marching orders after a 2-1 FA Cup defeat by lower league Salford yesterday.

Hurst, along with assistant Chris Doig - the same number two he had at Town - had overseen a run of just one win in 12 games.

The Shrews sit 23rd in League One, three points from safety, after 14 games.

Since leaving Town in October 2018, the 50-year-old has had a short spell in charge at Scunthorpe United before three years at Grimsby Town which was followed by a return to Shrewsbury in January.

"However, after a run that has seen us win just two of our 19 games this season (a win rate of 10.5 per cent), the board feels a change is needed.

"The chairman would like to thank both Paul and Chris for all their hard work over the past 11 months.

"We would also like to thank them for the outstanding work they did in their first spell – which saw us reach the League One play-off final and the final of the EFL Trophy.

"It was that success that led to the Chairman taking responsibility for re-hiring Paul and Chris earlier this year.

"And everyone at the football club is hugely disappointed their second spell hasn’t worked out and we find ourselves in our current position."

In his first spell at the Shrews, Hurst got them into the League One play-off final in 2017-18, a game they lost 2-1 to Rotherham United - an achievement which prompted then Town owner Marcus Evans to make the ill-fated decision to name Hurst as his new boss.

After his appalling start to the 2018/19 season and subsequent sacking, Town were relegated from the Championship under Paul Lambert.
