France players ratings vs Poland: Kylian Mbappe on another level as Olivier Giroud produces classic display
France booked a spot in the quarter-finals of the World Cup by overcoming Poland in a 3-1 win.
Olivier Giroud opened the scoring and Kylian Mbappe struck twice after half-time to secure the win for Didier Deschamps’ side, who will face England or Senegal in the next round.
Poland did create chances, but France were the better team and worthy winners on a night where Giroud became the country’s record goalscorer.
Mbappe created his goal and was again in sparkling form as he made it 3-0, scoring his fourth and fifth goals of the tournament, with Robert Lewandowski’s late penalty nothing more than a consolation.
Simon Collings was at the Al Thumama Stadium to see France in action...
Hugo Lloris 7
Was having a fairly quiet evening’s work before being called into action shortly before half-time as he made a brilliant save to deny Piotr Zielinski. Unable to deny Lewandowski from the spot.
Jules Kounde 5
Didn’t have a great game and all of Poland’s joy in attack came down his side. Looks like a centre-back filling in at right-back.
Raphael Varane 7
You can see why Didier Deschamps was desperate to get him back fit. Is a real leader in the backline and cleared one effort off line.
Dayot Upamecano 6
Not quite as good as Varane and was almost caught being sloppy in possession during the first-half. Improved as the game went on.
Lucas Hernandez 6
Evidently prefers attacking more than he does defending, and got forward as much as he could. Linked up well with Mbappe.
Antoine Griezmann 7
Played in a much deeper role than he is usually asked to. Is essentially a No8 and did plenty of dirty work, starting the second goal by hacking the ball clear near his own six-yard box.
Aurelien Tchouameni 6
Started the game really well as he sprayed the ball about all over the pitch. Broke up play too, but had the wind knocked out of his sails when booked. Taken off with just over an hour to go.
Adrien Rabiot 6
Not at the level he has been in other games during this tournament, but still did okay. Provided good cover when Hernandez bombed on.
Ousmane Dembele 7
Started well and showed real pace to cause Poland problems. Created a golden chance for Giroud, but the striker missed from close out.
Olivier Giroud 8
Scored to become France’s all-time record goalscorer, with 52 to his name. This was a classic Giroud performance as he worked hard for the benefit of others.
Kylian Mbappe 9 | Star player
Just looked a cut above everyone else on the pitch. His pace caused Poland so many problems and he twice had defenders sat on their backsides. Set up the Giroud goal and then scored two. Sublime.
