'Freak' accident and crutches - Coventry City injury latest on Dovin, Wright and Sheaf
Coventry City’s injury list increased significantly at the weekend with Haji Wright requiring a stretcher to get him to the dressing room before leaving the Stadium of Light on crutches.
Elsewhere, key midfielder Ben Sheaf sat out at Sunderland with a foot injury while goalkeeper Oliver Dovin fell victim to a “freak” training ground accident, although the exact details of which remain a mystery.
Wright hobbled off on the far side of the pitch in the 87th minute, whereupon he needed a stretcher to transport him around the outside of the field and down the tunnel.

Asked what he has done, interim coach Rhys Carr said after the 2-2 draw at Sunderland: “I have seen him briefly. He came into the dressing room on crutches and with bags of ice on his ankle. That will take a little bit of time to get assessed properly to see where he is, so it’s difficult to know where he is with that but hopefully it’s not too bad. I think he went over on it or twisted it. I spoke to him really briefly but fingers crossed it’s not too bad.”
As for Dovin, Carr revealed: “There was a real freak accident yesterday (Fri) at the training ground. He was desperate to play but on medical advice we decided that Oliver’s health was more important than a game of football. He is extremely disappointed but I just felt that was the right thing to do for his welfare.”
Asked what he has done, he said: “I can’t really disclose what it is but it is something that we felt his welfare was more important on, so that’s where we are on that one.”
He added: “I want to make a quick note on the side of that how well Brad (Collins) stepped in today. He’s been under the weather, coughing and spluttering and he’s stepped up today after not playing football this season. So a bit of a nod to Brad there.”
As for skipper Sheaf, he revealed: “With Sheafy, he’s captain of the team and we gave him as long as we could. He’s a top player but we didn’t feel we could get the best version of Ben today with the knock that he has got so we made the decision to do things a different way.
“He’s got a knock on a foot which is giving him difficulty with change of direction and things like that, and the way Ben plays the game you have to be at 100 percent to do that. So we weren’t able to get the best version of Ben, so we made that decision.
“He did it on Wednesday night and he’s absolutely gutted. He’s captain of the team. He tried to train yesterday but he found it really difficult, and I think time was against us on this occasion. But Joel (Latibeaudiere) went in there and he was fantastic. He’s played in central midfield for Jamaica so I thought he stepped in well for us.”
