JACOB Gannon has made the permanent move to York Knights after a successful loan spell.

The young forward scored twice in 18 appearances on loan from Betfred Super League side Leigh Leopards this season as Mark Applegarth’s side reached the Betfred Championship play-off semi-final and earned a highest league finish since 2019.

That was the 22-year-old’s second loan spell in the city, having featured twice for the club on loan from Super League heavyweights Warrington Wolves in 2021.

Applegarth has predicted a bright future for Gannon at York, with his signing helping to fill the void left by Ronan Michael, who has joined Championship rivals Bradford Bulls.

Predominantly plying his trade in the second-row for the Knights this term, Gannon can also play at prop and strengthens their forward pack.

A former England Academy international, he joined Leigh at the start of 2023.

Since, he has spent time on loan in the Championship with Halifax Panthers,  London Broncos and Swinton Lions, and also with Rochdale Hornets in Betfred League One.

“Jacob’s another player I coached on the England Pathways and I think he’s got a really bright future ahead of him.

“He did a fantastic job covering the back row for us last year when we had a few injuries. I know he sees himself as a middle so I think he’s really going to make a mark this year and make the shirt his own.

“I’m delighted he’s signed up and I’m really looking forward to working with him again.”

Gannon is the Knights’ sixth new signing for 2025, following hookers Paul McShane and Jacques O’Neill, centres Jude Ferreira and Kieran Buchanan, and talented teenager James Farrar to the club.
