Gary Lineker labels rule ‘bonkers’ after Aston Villa twice denied at Liverpool
Aston Villa slipped to a fourth straight defeat at the hands of Liverpool on Saturday but Unai Emery was left feeling aggrieved that his side weren’t awarded a penalty at Anfield.
Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah scored Liverpool’s goals to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table. Villa have dropped to eighth in the standings after 11 matches.
The result at Anfield might have been different had Villa been awarded one of two penalty shouts. Ollie Watkins tangled with Ibrahima Konate inside the box and Liverpool right-back Conor Bradley tugged Pau Torres at a set piece.

Villa boss Emery felt the incident involving Torres ‘was clearly a penalty’. But Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer isn’t convinced the contact was enough to warrant a spot-kick.
Shearer said: “There’s no doubt he’s pulling his shirt but what they’ll tell you is that it’s not sustained. There’s probably not enough for it to be a penalty.”
MOTD host Gary Lineker added: “It’s funny where we are in the rules now that we have a rule where it’s not sustained pulling. It’s bonkers.”
