Gary Neville is insistent that Liverpool won't win the Premier League title this season having initially predicted the Reds to drop out of the top four spots under Arne Slot.

And ahead of the club game resuming following the international break, the former Manchester United man was in a bold mood again as he stunned Ian Wright with his prediction for this weekend. Liverpool returns to action with a trip to St Mary's to play Southampton on Sunday.

Neville and Paul Scholes, on the Stick To Football podcast brought to you by Sky Bet, initially went for a 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Southampton. Even allowing for a surprise or two on the first weekend back, that seemed like a particularly bold suggestion.

"We’ll go 1-1," Neville said. Wright challenged the prediction immediately. "Really?" he said. "Hang on. Hang on, wait a minute. Liverpool are top are you crazy? Why am I telling you lot? Why am I helping you? Jesus Christ."

The former Old Trafford pair then opted to change their predicted score to a 2-1 win for Liverpool away on the South Coast. Wright and Roy Keane went for a 3-1 win for the Reds.

Liverpool.com says: While nothing can be taken for granted and Manchester City only won 1-0 against Southampton recently, predicting anything other than a Liverpool victory would be a rogue shout. The Reds are in great form and Russell Martin's men have been struggling a lot.

Slot will offer the latest on injuries in tomorrow's press conference. The Liverpool boss will hope to have Alisson Becker and Harvey Elliott back available soon. But even if those two are not quite ready to be in the matchday squad just yet, the Reds should still have enough to get over the line and maintain their five-point lead at the top.
