Wolves goalscorer Matheus Cunha has said there is more to come from him this season.

In a season filled mostly with lows, Cunha has been a shining light and was a big part in the 2-0 win over Southampton last weekend.

He said: "Every single time I do my best to help my team. I know I'm very important for these guys, but, always, I think I need to improve more and then try my best on the pitch."

On the Southampton win, he said: “They played very well. I love to play with the ball, but then, when you see this kind of teams play with a lot of power, and they believe a lot in their mentality to play like this.

“We needed that second goal, but of course, it's hard because they don’t give you a lot of the ball, but it's so beautiful how they play. But in football, it's like how it is in life, everyone only ever thinks about the results.”

Manager Gary O'Neil knows just how important Cunha is to the side. He admitted: “He is huge to us, and all the work we do is around being connected to the team, because he has such ability, but he is one of those players that drifts and takes up positions and trying to find roles for him to do without the ball can be tough.

“We work very hard with him on how important it is to be a trusted team member when we don't have the ball. We all know the quality that he has and the difference he can make in games for us is huge.

“He’s worked very hard at it since Brentford away, when I spoke to him fairly harshly, about where I thought he was team-wise, his performances without the ball and his work for the team has been exceptional since then, and then his quality gets to show.

“It’s a big win for us and Matheus has a big part to play in it, but the other lads gave absolutely everything, especially in that first-half, when it was a little bit tough and our shape against theirs didn't really fit too well, they had to dig deep, and they had to find a way, so it was a big win.”
