George Best lines up beside Pele and Thierry Henry in major memorabilia auction

George Best will line up beside Pele and Thierry Henry at a special football memorabilia auction being held next month. Graham Budd Auctions are giving buyers the chance to own items that once belonged to some of the biggest names in sporting history.

The two-day sale, takes place on December 3-4 and will include several lots from the world-renowned legends and other former football greats.

There will also be lots featuring former Manchester United players Mike Duxbury and Johnny Carey, FA Cup winner George Richardson, and a Liverpool programme collection from 1892 up to 1930. A selection of beautiful vintage rugby shirts from David Duckham from 1973 is also up for grabs.

The sale runs across two days and includes 1356 lots with an estimated total value of £700,000 - £1.1 million.

It includes a very special match worn white Number 11 shirt from Benfica player Antonia Simoes, who exchanged shirts with Manchester United legend and Belfast boy Best at the end of the 1968 European Cup final. Best then wore the shirt inside out whilst celebrating the historic victory at Wembley.

Items from the George Best Collection, which are already receiving early bids, also include a Player of the Year trophy estimated at £30,000-50,000, which was presented to Best by the Football Writers Association in 1968 following United’s European Cup Win.

David Convery from Graham Budd Auctions said: “For British football fans there is no one quite as iconic as George Best, and the opportunity to own something that this sporting legend and World Cup winner once wore is not to be missed. These incredible items offer fans the chance to really put themselves in the shoes of one of the greatest players of all time.

"The auction this December is packed with history, from Liverpool programmes, to items belonging to iconic players in Manchester United’s past. With bids already starting to roll in, we urge anyone interested to take a look at the catalogue and start thinking about owning your own piece of history.”

Other auction highlights include The Pele Collection of 80 lots valued at a total of £120,000-150,000. It includes Pele's 1954 Bauru AC juvenile championship medal valued at £8,000-12,000, a 1970 Chilean tribute crown (£12,000-18,000), and a 14th July 1976 1,250th goal tribute trophy, valued at £14,000-18,000.

There is also the Thierry Henry Collection which boasts 44 lots valued at £40,000-60,000. They include Henry’s match issued Champion League Final shirt from 2006, £2,000-3,000 and two F.A.Cup final match issued shirt 2002 and 2003, £1,000-1,500 each.

Other highlights include a collection of vintage rugby shirts worn by England Rugby legend David Duckham, including the shirt he wore for the iconic Barbarians vs All Blacks match in 1973, famous for Gareth Edwards scoring what has become known as ‘The Greatest Try’.

There is also an incredible collection of Liverpool match programmes from 1892-1930, collectively valued at £25,000-£35,000, and George Richardson’s 1922 F.A.Cup Winner's medal (valued at £6,000-£12,000) and his 1920 F.A.Cup Final match worn shirt (£5,000-8,000).

The Dave Bassett Collection includes 15 lots in total including his League Championship winners medal, 1997-98 £2,000-3,000.

There is a collection from Manchester United’s Mike Duxbury of 61 lots, including two F.A.Cup Winners medals 1983 and 1985 valued at £12,000-18,000 each, match worn shirts and tracksuit tops. The collection is valued at a total of £60,000-80,000.
