George Edmundson's solid performance for Middlesbrough against Luton Town is even more impressive when contextualised by the fact he was ill overnight before the game, and was sick twice during it.

The centre-back has been a rock at the back for Boro since joining on loan from Ipswich Town on transfer deadline day. Michael Carrick has solid defensive options, but the 27-year-old has quickly established himself at the Riverside despite little fanfare over his arrival.

No doubt concerned about losing his place as Dael Fry returns to the fold, Edmundson was determined to play against Luton and played his part in an excellent 5-1 victory, in which he had to the tough task of keeping Elijah Adebayo quiet. A forward who managed ten goals for Luton in the Premier League last season, Edmundson managed him with little fuss, despite the problems he had which Carrick revealed after.

“Neto missed out through illness and George very nearly did as well," the Boro boss said. "He was touch and go. He struggled to get through the game and was sick on the pitch in both the first half and the second half. It shows his character to get through the game.

"Dael was ready to start at one stage. George was ill overnight then sick on the pitch twice. So fair play to him, that kind of shows where the boys are at - Neto the same getting through two games for us as well. We had to play Luke [Ayling] at left-back and I thought he did particularly well."

Edmundson's illness comes as Neto Borges was forced to miss the Luton win with the same problem. He'd played through the Coventry City game and then started at QPR while also ill, before succumbing to it just after the interval and needing to come off. A two-week break for internationals follows Boro's Luton win and it sounds like it might come at a good time for them.
