The ghostly parallels Rangers and Tottenham bosses share as Ange and Clement have under the radar kinship
The Tottenham board are standing by Ange Postecoglou for now - and the reasons why hit close to home for Philippe Clement
The former Celtic boss brings his team to Ibrox for a Europa League Battle of Britain on Thursday night and it's a meeting of two managers who have had their critics this season. But after a recent upturn in Rangers' form, it's Postecoglou who finds himself more under the cosh - and desperately in need of a positive result to turn the volume down on the dissenting voices.
He's won just one of his last seven matches and defeat to Chelsea at the weekend leaves them 11th in the Premier League. But despite that, our sister title Football London are reporting there are no immediate plans to consider his future. Barring a shocker of a result in Glasgow, it seems Postecoglou is going to get the Christmas period to steady the ship, and the one of the reasons given for that is the amount of injuries he has had to contend with.
He lost Cristian Romero within 14 minutes in the London derby at the weekend, while No.1 Gugliamo Vicario, striker Richarlison and defender Ben Davies are also sidelined. There's a belief at board level that has been a major factor in their recent collapse.
That is of course something Clement can relate to. Rangers have been without 14 players through injury at various points of the season and he is only now starting to see something close to a full strength squad. Danilo, Tom Lawrence, Ridvan Yilmaz and more recently Neraysho Kasanwirjo have been among the players sidelined for long spells and the plethora of problems on that front have gained the Ibrox boss some sympathy, just like his counterpart in the dugout on Thursday.
Perhaps more pressingly, it's also reported that Postecoglou still has the universal support within the Spurs dressing room, another factor which has the board reluctant to rock the boat by making a change at this stage. It seems the players are still buying into Angeball even if the results haven't reflected it, and the vibe emanating from the camp is markedly similar to the situation at Ibrox.
Midfielder Connor Barron has been among the players who have reassured the media in recent weeks that the Rangers players still stand by their boss. Speaking after a damaging draw with Dundee United last month, he said: “We’re all pulling in the same direction. We’re all in it together. The gaffer has been fine. He’s been positive, looking at things. We are over the game; we’ve debriefed and gone over the things that we need to do better.
“Everyone feels that we haven’t done our job on the day. Everyone takes responsibility for that. It’s not just down on one person’s shoulders; it’s us out on the pitch that need to be pulling our weight as well.
“We all know that everyone is part of the result at the end of the day. We are a team. It’s down to all of us to go out on Thursday night and make sure we get a result. We know we’ve got to bounce back.”
Since then, it's been four wins from four for Clement, who has eased the pressure on himself, and goes into Thursday's clash knowing only an abject hammering will resurface any serious questions over his future. Less so for Postecoglou, for whom failure to win would surely see disgruntled punters turn the screw even further. But for now, it seems neither manager is in imminent danger - and for similar reasons.
