Gloucester Rugby battled to a 36-28 victory over Championship side Cornish Pirates at Kingsholm stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Tries from Ollie Thorley, Max Knight, Morgan Adderly-Jones and Jack Reeves were enough to secure the win against an impressive performance from the Cornwall side against a largely youthful and inexperienced squad put out by the Premiership side.

The Cornish Pirates, however, came out the blocks firing from the start, Will Gibson picked a great line from close range and gave the away team a surprise lead early on. With George Skivington watching on in the stands, Gloucester soon hit back through Ollie Thorley as the winger worked off his wing to go through a gap and score.

Alfie Petch was then sin-binned for a cynical attempt at slowing down the ball but momentum was still with the home team who scored again through Max Knight shortly after. With momentum firmly with the home team, former Pirate Morgan Nelson found himself on the end of a strong rolling maul to strengthen the Cherry and White's lead.

But Cornish Pirates wouldn’t lie down with Sol Moody profiting off the back of a strong maul midway through the second half.

With the game in the balance, Gloucester seemingly delivered the decisive blow as Jack Reeves dove under the Cornish defence to score late on in the corner. Freddie Clarke was then sin-binned shortly after, Sol Moody then picked and went from close range to get his second and set up a possible comeback.

Despite the late tension, the visitors couldn’t create find another score, and a late Rory Taylor penalty sealed a tough win for the hosts who remain second in Pool E behind Exeter Chiefs who come to Kingsholm next in the competition before a return to Gallagher Premiership action.
