Gloucester's new talisman Tomos Williams sent home from Wales injured
Star Gloucester Rugby scrum-half Tomos Williams has been released from Wales’ Autumn Nations Series squad due to a shoulder injury.
The Gloucester number nine was hurt during Wales’ 24-19 defeat against opening autumn opponents Fiji. He had already been ruled out of Sunday’s Test with Australia, being replaced in the starting line-up by Ellis Bevan, with Rhodri Williams gaining a place on the bench. But in midweek Wales head coach Warren Gatland said that Williams had undergone a scan on his shoulder and was 50/50 to be fit to play for his country again this Autumn with world champions South Africa coming to Cardiff on November 23. However now experienced Ospreys scrum-half Kieran Hardy has now been called up to the squad as replacement for Williams, the Welsh Rugby Union said.

Williams joined the Cherry and Whites from Cardiff Rugby in the summer and has been nothing short of a revelation since arrival at Kingsholm, standing out as the club’s top performer week after week. The 59 cap international has also made an immediate impression on the leadership front with director of rugby George Skivington making him the captain whenever club captain Lewis Ludlow isn’t involved.
Despite Wales losing their 10th consecutive Test match on Sunday, Williams remains one of the few players in Gatland’s squad who look serious contenders to make the British and Irish Lions tour to Australia in the summer. His immediate impact at club level saw Gloucester allow Italian international Stephen Varney to leave the club for French Top 14 side Vannes last month having not played in 2024/24.
Gloucester will restart their league campaign away at defending champions Northampton Saints on Saturday, November 30. Should Williams not be involved, the only good news is the club are well stocked a nine with with Charlie Chapman a standout performer during the two narrow Premiership Rugby Cup wins over the Autumn international window and the highly thought of Caolan Englefield in the wings. But there is no denying any significant injury would be a hammer blow for the Cherry and Whites' ambitions this season.
