Gossip: Real Madrid 'want to swap Bale for Salah', Man Utd and Bournemouth 'chase Tierney', Pochettino's 'Spurs future in doubt'
No one really thinks Mo Salah is going to leave Liverpool. Not this summer, anyway. No chance. Not unless Egypt win the World Cup and Paris Saint-Germain make him the world’s first billion-pound player.
But this doesn’t mean the tabloids can’t suggest different ways in which Salah might be prised away from Anfield. They enjoy it, it’s fine. So today the Daily Star are having a go at concocting a chain of events that will result in Salah switching clubs this summer, and at the centre of their concoction is Gareth Bale.
The Star says Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is “keen” to sell the Welshman to the Reds because he wants to use him as part of a swap deal for Salah.
There are a few potential hitches in his plan though. The first is that Liverpool don’t want to sell Salah; the second is that they don’t particularly want to sign Bale; and the third is that Bale has “no interest” in moving to Anfield either because he is “only willing to join Tottenham”.

There is also the fact that the story has been lifted wholesale by the Star from Spanish mavericks Don Balon, who it says “are well known for their outlandish transfer claims”. Which is a bit rich from the newspaper that recently gave us the front-page headline, “Mutant rats in your kebab – eat them before they eat you!”
Cherries battle Spurs and United for Celtic starlet
Back in the real world (well, actually, in the Sun – so not really the real world at all) there is a another left-footed hotshot being coveted by Spurs and Manchester United just like Bale was as a young man.
This time, the young man is Kieran Tierney, the 20-year-old Celtic full-back who the Sun says is wanted by the Red Devils, the Lilywhites and… Bournemouth.
Cherries boss Eddie Howe, feeling pumped after leading his side to the brink of Premier League safety, is ready to “battle” with the top six giants for the £20m-rated Scot and is ready to offer him a guarantee of first-team football along with a “lucrative” deal.
If Man Utd aren’t scared by that, they may be more rattled by the Mirror’s claim that they have been “warned off” making bids for Lazio trio Luis Alberto, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ciro Immobile (Mirror). United boss Jose Mourinho has been linked with moves for all three players but the Italian club’s owner Igil Tare has reportedly issued the Special One with a good old “hands-off warning”.
Meanwhile, there is some frightening news for Tottenham fans in the Mirror, which says Mauricio Pochettino has “cast further doubt” on his future at the club by “refusing to confirm” whether he will be in charge next season. The story hasn’t convinced the Mirror’s readers though, 76% of whom believe The Poch will still be at White Hart Lane come August.
Elsewhere, West Ham, Burnley and Wolves will try to sign West Brom centre-back Craig Dawson if and when the Baggies get relegated (Mirror), Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke will “discuss his future” in the summer after scoring just three goals this season (Mail) and Liverpool’s assistant manager Zeljko Buvac has quit the club following a “dispute” with boss Jurgen Klopp (Record). Allegedly Jurgen was annoyed that Zeljko was copying his dress sense resulting in constant outfit clashes on the touchline.
