'I can guarantee Darwin Núñez change next season because of big Liverpool difference'

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has suggested that Darwin Núñez could benefit the most from a change of manager this summer. Feyenoord head coach Arne Slot is set to take over from Jürgen Klopp at Anfield.

Núñez has scored 18 times this season but has only found the back of the net in one of his last 10 league appearances for Liverpool. He has faced some difficulties lately in terms of his all-round game and has been caught offside more times than anyone in the Premier League.

But Nicol believes that a reset this summer could help Núñez to get back on track and take the next step in his Anfield career. Signed from Benfica for an initial fee of around $74m (£64m/€80m) almost two years ago, Liverpool is yet to see the best of the 24-year-old forward who has struggled for consistency.

"I think of all the players at Liverpool who will be there next year, it is probably going to be best for somebody like Darwin Núñez," Nicol told ESPN. "It’s a complete fresh start. There might be a little tinkering with how Liverpool play.

"That changes a lot of things on the field. He’s the one that will probably benefit as much as anybody from the change of manager. The only thing I can guarantee you is that Darwin Núñez, from the very first day they get back, will be doing every single thing he can and more to impress Arne Slot. It is a new start for him."

Liverpool.com says: Next season is going to be fascinating for Núñez. He has all the raw ingredients but he needs to tie those together pretty quickly to turn around some of the doubters. In front of goal, he could do with finding some much-needed calmness.

Núñez did exactly that against Aston Villa when he went through one-versus-one but was then pulled back for a narrow offside offense. The margins are fine at the top level but there is a player there that Slot can hopefully unlock.

The Liverpool system is not going to be completely different under Slot, though, so most of the improvement for Núñez will need to come on an individual basis. It might suddenly click into gear for him but there is no guarantee of that happening.
