Hot Football Transfer Gossip: Valencia ‘target Mourinho’, Arsenal want new midfield

In four short months Gary Neville has gone from being football’s ultimate know-it-all, telling everyone what they are doing wrong, to a sporting pariah, leaving a trail of destruction and tears in his wake. Because it’s not just Valencia’s season he has ruined with his lack of managerial nous; GNev2 may also have thrown a spanner into the plans of his beloved Manchester United.

The Sun reports that the managerless La Liga side will move to appoint Jose Mourinho - the man many United fans hope will rescue them from the reign of Louis van Gaal - as Neville’s successor with immediate effect. The Portuguese coach to said have already held “serious talks” with Valencia’s owner Peter Lim, who is mates with lots of United legends because he co-owns Salford City FC with the entire Class of 92 mob.

Which is also interesting because if Lim manages to lure Mourinho to the Mestalla - the Sun says he has offered the Special One a £100m transfer kitty and a £15m-a-year contract - then it would increase the chances of his other pal Ryan Giggs taking over at Old Trafford. And who would Giggsy get in as his number two? Quite possibly Gary Neville.

Arsene Wenger is planning to “rebuild his midfield”, says the Guardian, with Borussia Dortmund’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan high on his shopping list. The Armenian international is apparently “torn” between signing a new contract with Dortmund and moving to the Emirates, where the Gunners have apparently “monitored his progress via video clips” - which doesn’t paint a very reassuring picture of the club’s scouting network.

Far more impressive is a claim in the Daily Mirror that Arsenal scouts have watched another Bundesliga midfielder, Borussia Monchengladbach’s Granit Xhaka, “30 times” this season alone. Either this means they are definitely going to buy the player, or it’s taking them a very long time be convinced by him. Or, alternatively, they have unwittingly employed a Borussia Monchengladbach fan as a scout.

Meanwhile, a former Gunners legend - Lord Nicklas Bendtner of Denmark - has been forced to call a “crisis summit” with his club Wolfsburg because there seems to have been a terrible mix-up whereby they have forgotten that he is the world’s most gifted striker and stopped putting him in their team (Bild).

Elsewhere, Manchester City are said to be “on the verge” of signing Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen for £20m - about £43m less than they were reportedly quoted a couple of days ago (Telegraph), West Ham will turn to City outcast Wilfried Bony if they fail to land top target Michy Batshuayi (also the Telegraph) and Mario Balotelli has received a “monster offer” from China (Star). We assume this refers to him possibly playing football out there, as opposed to an offer from an actual monster, but you never know with Mario.
