Howard Webb will be back on our TV screens on Tuesday evening - a little more than 24 hours after one of his top officials in the Premier League was suspended.

Referee David Coote was in charge of Liverpool's clash with Aston Villa on Saturday night, but on Monday, a video circulated on social media appearing to show him criticising the Merseyside club and their former manager, Jurgen Klopp. In the footage, it appears the match official was heavily critical of the ex-Liverpool boss after his actions during a game during the pandemic.

"Aside from having a right pop at me when I was reffing against Burnley in lockdown, he accused me of lying and then just had a right f****** pop at me," the person alleged to be the Premier League referee states. "I’ve got no interest in speaking to somebody as f****** arrogant. I do my best not to speak to him…"

In a twist of fate, Webb is scheduled to be on the Match Officials Mic'd Up show tonight. The programme sees the referee chief discuss major decisions from the last few weeks of Premier League action with the conversations between the referees and VAR broadcast to the public.

After the clip went viral, the PGMOL released the following statement: "David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation. PGMOL will be making no further comment until that process is complete."

This would suggest that Webb will not be discussing Coote during the broadcast. However, there is greater scrutiny on the PGMOL and their impartiality following the alleged comments from a high-standing Premier League referee.

Coote has refereed Manchester United twice this season, most recently in the 2-1 defeat against West Ham. He most recently refereed Manchester City during last December's 2-0 victory over Sheffield United.
