Eight matches unbeaten. Twenty points out of a possible 24. Seven home wins in a row for the first time in 21 years.

Everything is looking rather good right now for Huddersfield Town, isn't it? Tuesday's victory over Wigan Athletic nudged the Terriers up to fourth in League One, five points off the automatic promotion places.

Champagne football against the Latics it was not. Michael Duff's men were forced to dig deep to grind out the three points. It will not be the first or last time they have to do that between now and next May.

Some of their football was stodgy at a flat John Smith's Stadium last night. There was not a lot for the fans to cheer or get excited about. It was a workmanlike performance.

In truth, there have been very few exhilarating, attacking performances under head coach Duff. He has focused on shoring things up at the back and making them harder to play against since Town's sticky patch between August and September. It is also worth stressing that a lengthy injury list has robbed Duff of a raft of first team players throughout his tenure.

"There is a mixed feeling in the dressing room as we feel we can play a lot better, especially with the ball," defender Tom Lees told Yorkshire Live. "But we are showing resilience and are finding ways to win.

"We are standing up to the games that are nip and tuck and we are coming out of it with three points. We know that we can play better and I think that is part of the standards and mentality the manager has tried to bring to the club. Alright isn't good enough and that's constantly drilled into us. We are happy with where we are in the league but we have still got a long way to go."

The January transfer window is fast approaching and a new striker is high on Town's wish-list. The Terriers missed out on signing Alfie May and Joe Taylor in the summer transfer window. It will be interesting to see if Town rekindle their interest in Taylor when the market opens on New Year's Day.

With Danny Ward, Bojan Radulovic and Freddie Ladapo having contributed little to their promotion push, there is a strong argument to suggest Town could do with signing two strikers. You would think one of Ward, Radulovic or Ladapo would have to move on, though, to free up space in the squad for that to happen.

The second position the Terriers urgently have to address is left wing back. Mickel Miller is unlikely to return to action until March after undergoing knee surgery. It was a major blow losing Miller as the former Rotherham United man has been one of Town's best performers this season.

There are still six important matches to be played before Town can bring in additional reinforcements. But if they can get a wing back and a proven striker in through the door, they are going to take some stopping in the second half of the season.
