Peta Hiku's New Zealand have seen their hopes of retaining the Pacific Championships crushed after suffering defeat to Tonga in one of the classic international contests. Tonga held off an incredible comeback from the Kiwis to win 25-24, booking their place in the final in the process.

New Zealand rallied, having been rocked in the first half. They found themselves 24-0 behind after 33 minutes following a pulsating start from the Tongans. But the Kiwis scored just before the break and by the 68th minute, the game was level.

Hiku had played a key role in the fightback after instigating the third try, making a break and launching a move that culminated in Phoenix Crossland scoring a stunning try by the sticks. Hiku had also played a part in the first try, taking a carry close to the Tongan line and Isaiah Papali'i scored from the following play the ball.

It wasn't enough though, as Isaiya Katoa kicked a drop goal five minutes from time, eventually seeing the Tongans home 25-24.

New Zealand won the competition last year, beating Australia in the final, but they have now been relegated to the Pacific Bowl, where they will play either Papua New Guinea and Fiji. As for Tonga, they will play Australia next weekend in the final.

Hiku ended the game with 135 metres from 13 carries, the third highest in the New Zealand team. He made two line breaks, the best in the Kiwis side, as well as 32 tackles.
