Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has admitted he was pleased to see Mohamed Salah leapfrog him in the Premier League all-time scoring charts - as he urged the Egyptian to stay at Anfield beyond the end of the season.

Last Saturday, Salah's second-half winner against Brighton & Hove Albion took his tally to 164 goals in the Premier League, with all but two of those coming since he moved to Anfield in 2017.

As a result of his trademark curling effort, the 32-year-old moved up to eighth on the list and one strike ahead of the 164 Fowler managed across spells at Anfield, Leeds United and Manchester City.

However, Reds icon Fowler, nicknamed 'God' by the Kop for his incredible scoring exploits, insists he had no qualms with Salah becoming the highest-placed Liverpool player on the list and even backed the Egyptian to soon overtake seventh-placed Thierry Henry.

"Mo Salah has jumped ahead of me in the Premier League’s all-time list of top scorers and I’m delighted for him," said Fowler in his recent Mirror column. "I’m a Liverpool fan so if he’s scoring goals that makes me happy.

"What he has achieved at Anfield is phenomenal, and now he’s chasing down Thierry Henry on 175 goals after moving up to No.8 on the list with his 164th goal against Brighton last week.

"With three-quarters of the season still to go, I’m sure Salah (right) will do it because his numbers so far for Liverpool are amazing. I’m proud to be in the top 10 of that list, but I have a regret."

"It’s because I know I might have been even higher if the last four years of my time in English football had been different. I was a bit-part player in that period and didn’t play as much as I’d have liked. I’d like to think I could have scored more if I had."

After finding the net in Saturday's 2-0 win over Aston Villa, Salah is now 10 goals behind two-time Premier League winner Henry (175).

If he continues at his current rate, he will surpass the Frenchman in no time at all. But how far Salah can move up the list after that is currently uncertain, as he's set to leave Anfield at the end of the season when his contract expires.

But after Salah's cryptic social media post affirmed his love for the club last weekend, Fowler believes the Egyptian wants to remain at Anfield.

"As for Salah’s cryptic message after his winner against Brighton, for me he’s telling Liverpool the ball is in their court over his contract situation," he added. "I believe he wants to stay – and I’m not alone at Anfield in hoping he does."
