Immanuel Feyi-Waboso misses England training – because he has an exam

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso is unavailable for England for training this week as the young medical student is sitting an exam at the University of Exeter.

Feyi-Waboso, 21, was arguably the biggest positive from England’s defeat against Scotland last weekend, impressing off the bench while also scoring his first try for England in the second half.

Combining his medical studies with playing for Exeter Chiefs and now England, Feyi-Waboso has not linked up with England’s training squad this week in York given he has to complete an in-person exam in Exeter.

Speaking during the first fallow week, Feyi-Waboso discussed combining his medical studies with life as a professional rugby player.

“A lot of it is theory in years one to three,” he said. “Obviously there’s the odd placement and stuff in GPs. But it’s just like systems, musculoskeletal system, endocrinology, reproductive system, stuff like that. Cool stuff. But a lot of theory. So I’m able to manage it a lot more, I’m able to manage it better with rugby at the moment.”

Feyi-Waboso has another medical exam three days after the end of the Six Nations when England return from France, previously revealing that the RFU doctor, Katy Hornby, was going to help with his preparation.

England have called up 36 players for their three-day training camp in York, with Bath’s Will Muir replacing Feyi-Waboso. Ben Curry (Sale Sharks) has also dropped out of the squad after picking up an injury in training and has been replaced by Tom Pearson (Northampton Saints). Muir and Pearson both played for England ‘A’ against Portugal last Sunday.

Marcus Smith and Alex Mitchell are both rehabilitating their respective injuries with the squad, after head coach Steve Borthwick revealed after the Scotland game that England hope to have both players available for the “the latter part of the tournament”. England face Ireland at Twickenham next Saturday before finishing their campaign against France in Lyon.
