Inter win 20th Serie A title after bad-tempered derby victory over rivals AC Milan

Inter Milan were crowned champions of Italy for the 20th time on Monday night.

Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram provided the goals in a 2-1 win over AC Milan which saw three players sent off.

While smoke from fans’ flares obscured much of the pitch at a hazy San Siro, tempers flared on the pitch too as the Rossoneri failed to prevent their rivals from winning the Scudetto in what was officially a Milan home game at their shared ground.

Centre-back Acerbi was left unmarked to turn home a header on the 18th minute as Inter put one hand on what has felt like an inevitable title triumph for much of the season.

Simone Inzaghi’s side have only lost once in Serie A and dominated much of this Derby della Madonnina.

Thuram came close to doubling the lead in the first half before firing home shortly after the break.

Milan, who sit second in the table and lifted the Scudetto a year ago, got back into the match via Fikayo Tomori’s late header.

But their hopes of puncturing the Inter party were sidetracked in stoppage time when Theo Hernandez and Denzel Dumfries were sent off for a scuffle.

Both sets of players piled in again when Milan captain Davide Calabria threw a hand at Davide Frattesi’s face while lining up for a corner, earning him a red card too.

The final whistle confirmed the Nerazzurri’s 20th Serie A title with five games still left to play, moving them past Milan’s tally of 19.
