Jack Butland will not be going to Euro 2024 with England after Gareth Southgate named his provisional squad today.

The Rangers goalkeeper has long been touted for a return to the international fold after an inspired first season at Ibrox following his free transfer from Crystal Palace. It was thought he was set for a call-up for the last Three Lions camp but it wasn't to be.

Butland retained hope of going to Germany this summer as it's not the strongest area of Southgate's squad. But he learned his fate today and hasn't even been named in the provisional training squad which will eventually be whittled down to a final 26 for the tournament.

Currently there are 33 players in the training group, including four goalkeepers. Those are Crystal Palace's Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford of Everton, Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale and James Trafford of Burnley.

Butland was named in the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Year and was nominated for the Player of the Year award before losing out to Hearts' Lawrence Shankland. He did however pick up POTY as well as players' player at his club's awards night.

There was reported interest from Nottingham Forest in the January window but club and player both gave it short shrift, and it's thought there could be further admiring glances from the Premier League this summer.
