Jamie Carragher has dispelled cries of the suggestion Liverpool is yet to be tested this season by a top team.

On Saturday, Liverpool's Premier League rivals Manchester City suffered a huge blow to their title hopes after they were resoundingly beaten 4-0 by Spurs at the Etihad. Ange Postecoglou's side dismantled City, scoring twice through James Maddison in the opening 20 minutes, with second half goals from Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson wrapping things up for Spurs.

Pep Guardiola's side now sit five points behind Liverpool after having lost five consecutive games in all competitions. Should the Reds beat Southampton on Sunday, they will go eight points clear of City - who they welcome to Anfield next weekend.

However, despite Liverpool being able to go 11 points clear if they beat Southampton and Man City, they will follow that up with tough away tests against Newcastle United and Everton. But, speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher reckons the Reds have done a good job beating the teams they should beat, which has set them up nicely for their upcoming big games.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said: "He's never going to say it's more significant (to win when City lose) but when you're in the game you know it's a great position to find yourself in. Eight points ahead of Manchester City and playing them at Anfield where notoriously Liverpool have done well in the past. It's a really big one for Liverpool.

"Liverpool's next four games, they've got three away. This is the biggest on paper. Everyone talks about Liverpool this season saying 'have they played anyone?' That was always the question to the manager.

"I'm a big believer in winning the games you're supposed to win, and the big games will take care of themselves. You're not going to win every one of them because you're up against top quality, but win the games you're supposed to.

"Liverpool will then go into a week where they've got the toughest home game they can have, Man City, then Newcastle away on a Wednesday night, then Everton away which is a notoriously tough game on the Saturday lunchtime. It's a really tough week after this one so make sure you do your job here and get the points in the bag, and who knows what'll happen over the next few games?"

Liverpool.com says: "It feels a bit disingenuous to claim Liverpool has not played anyone this term. They've beaten Bayer Leverkusen, Aston Villa, Brighton, Chelsea, RB Leipzig, AC Milan and Manchester United this season. They drew 2-2 with Arsenal too. Ultimately, you can only beat whats in front of you, which Liverpool has done."
