Jamie Carragher has admitted he deserved the put-down he received from Kate Scott after his insensitive remark about the popular presenter's now-husband during a Champions League broadcast last season.

The incident occurred after Arsenal had knocked Porto out of the Champions League at the Emirates, when Liverpool legend Carragher put on an Arsenal jersey at the end of the CBS broadcast after being asked to do so by Bukayo Saka.

Carragher then suggested that Abdo should also wear the jersey, but she refused, saying: "No, I'm loyal... to Manchester United, thank you very much." Carragher then unwisely responded by saying: "Not to Malik!"

An awkward moment of silence followed, before Abdo said: "What? Why would you even say that?" Carragher then awkwardly burst into laughter, while the rest of the panel looked quite uncomfortable.

The following night's CBS broadcast began with Abdo playing down the incident, which had gained plenty of traction on social media, likening Carragher to an annoying family member as she said Thierry Henry, Carragher and Micah Richards were like her brothers on the broadcast.

"There is the middle child, Jamie Carragher, a chip on his shoulder, capable of saying anything for attention," she began. "Does he go too far sometimes? Absolutely. But does he apologise? Yes he does. But we all have that one annoying family member that we still love and accept."

Addressing that brilliant intro by Abdo in an interview with The Ringer, Carragher said: "We never ignore the elephants in the room. I was a little child. I was just getting a little smack and getting put back in place, and rightly so."

Speaking in the same interview, Abdo said: “I think the reason that we function well is because we needle each other. That’s like a sports team, right? I feel like those inappropriate conversations should be had in the locker room and kept in the locker room. You deal with them internally, and then you move on.”

The intro where Abdo referred to Carragher a 'the middle child' was actually written by Abdo herself as she opted to put the previous night's comment behind her, a moment which prompted plenty of praise from the show's co-ordinating producer, Pete Radovich. “To put it to rest and make everyone feel good, including the audience, is everything you need to know about her,” Radovich said. “That was just Hall of Fame stuff.”
