Who is Jamie Gittens? Borussia Dortmund's latest English star on Liverpool transfer radar

Liverpool has become one of the latest sides to be linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund starlet Jamie Gittens after reportedly sending scouts to watch him in recent weeks.

The 20-year-old is just the latest English talent to impress at the Bundesliga outfit following the revelations of Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham in recent years, with Signal Iduna Park continuing to uphold its reputation as one of the best places for bringing through future stars.

And following an impressive start to life in Germany with Nuri Şahin's side, Gittens is naturally attracting the attention of some of Europe's biggest clubs, with Liverpool now emerging as one of the names on that list according to German outlet BILD.

But just who is Jamie Gittens and why does Liverpool potentially want him? Liverpool.com tells you all you need to know about the England-born youngster, including where he plays and what he's achieved so far.

Who is Jamie Gittens?

Gittens was born in London on August 8, 2004, and joined Reading's academy at the age of seven. After spending time with Chelsea, the youngster opted to remain with the Royals up until Under-14 level, when he eventually chose to sign with Manchester City.

Gittens then signed for Borussia Dortmund in 2020 and after impressing in the UEFA Youth League with six goals in four games in the 2021-22 campaign, made his first-team debut in a 6–1 win over VfL Wolfsburg on April 16, 2022. He has since made 67 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga side, scoring nine goals and providing 11 assists.

Primarily a winger who likes to cut in and use his right foot, Gittens has also been capped up to U21 level for England and has one goal in nine games for The Three Lions. He was also part of the U19 squad that won the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in 2022.

Season so far

Having finally enjoyed his first injury-free season in 2023-24, making 34 appearances in all competitions and notably providing a goal and assist in a 3-1 victory away to AC Milan in the Champions League, Gittens has hit the ground running in the current campaign.

In just nine appearances this season, the youngster has already found the back of the net on four occasions, while providing a further two assists. Two of his strikes came in the opening weekend of the 2024-25 Bundesliga season, where he came off the bench to score both goals in a 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

He then did the same in Dortmund's opening Champions League tie away to Club Brugge last month, featuring for just 22 minutes off the bench yet scoring a stunning brace to help his side to a 3-0 win.

What's been said about him?

Other than Bild's recent report regarding Liverpool's interest, not a lot else has been mentioned on the transfer front, although it's claimed that Dortmund wants a "mega deal" to sell the young star. According to Transfermarkt, however, Gittens is currently only valued at around $33million (£25m/€35m).

With regards to his attributes on the pitch, however, Gittens has earned glowing references from his Dortmund teammates. Reported Liverpool transfer target Karim Adeyemi said: "He has no fear. For me, he is one of the best players one-against-one I have ever seen."

Julian Brandt claimed Gittens has "everything needed to take a big step" in his career, as per Bundesliga.com, while Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic added: "He's a game-changer in the truest sense. He's just so explosive."
