Jamie Redknapp and Paul Merson share Liverpool title stance after Arsenal drops points

Jamie Redknapp and Paul Merson are both in agreement that this weekend has gone very well for Liverpool — despite the Reds not being in action after the Merseyside derby was called off.

"What a weekend for Liverpool," Redknapp said on Sky Sports after watching Fulham 1-1 Arsenal, with the visitors denied a late winner after the closest of offside calls. He added: "Manchester City dropped points, Arsenal dropped points. They didn't even have to play and are now in an even better position.

"Arne Slot will have had his heart in his mouth for that VAR decision and it is probably the biggest of the season. Gabriel Martinelli had to keep himself onside."

Liverpool is now six points ahead of Arsenal and seven ahead of Manchester City. Chelsea could move within four points of the Reds by beating Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

"It was a massive weekend with Liverpool not playing," Merson added. "The gap could have been four points and that would have been huge. It is a bad result.

"Fulham is not an easy place to go but if you want to win Premier League titles, you have to win at Craven Cottage. It is a nightmare at the end with the disallowed goal but it is advantage Liverpool."

Liverpool.com says: This weekend shows why Liverpool is in the driving seat for the Premier League title at the moment. While the Reds will drop points, as they did at Newcastle midweek, so too will their rivals. The gap is large enough to give Liverpool more wriggle room which should, in one way, take the pressure off a little.

There is still two-thirds of the league season to play but neither Manchester City nor Arsenal look flawless so far. Chelsea could be up there but Liverpool has already shown itself to be a level above in the game at Anfield in October, won by Curtis Jones.
