Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp had to endure an awkward moment on air with broadcaster Kelly Cates at half-time during Liverpool's 3-2 win over Southampton - but the Super Sunday host bailed him out.

The Reds moved eight points clear at the top of the Premier League, turning the game around in the final 25 minutes after being 2-1 down against the Saints, with a brace from Mohamed Salah seeing Arne Slot's side past Southampton.

However, one notable talking point at half-time was the awkward interaction between Redknapp and Cates. Following Liverpool's game, the next match being broadcast by Sky Sports was Ipswich Town and Manchester United clash at Portman Road.

Because of this, Ipswich supporter and minority shareholder Ed Sheeran popped into the studio at Portman Road to meet Redknapp, Cates, Roy Keane and Izzy Christiansen. But what actually transpired was an awkward encounter.

"Minority shareholder at Ipswich and pop sensation [Ed Sheeran] came in for a photograph. Which was perfect. Ipswich versus Manchester United kicks off at 4:30," said Cates. Redknapp then interjected: "He’d love the shape of you!"

In the background, Keane can then be heard saying: "Ooooooo," leading Redknapp to add: "Can I say that these days?" prompting Cates to say: "I mean, I wouldn't!"

Cue plenty of laughter in the Sky Sports studio, sparing Redknapp's blushes.

Liverpool.com says: "It was an awkward comment from Redknapp, but he was saved by Cates' quick thinking. Probably best to not ad-lib again anytime soon Jamie..."
